Hard-Line Republican Leads Race to Succeed Louisiana's Democratic Governor

22:49 14.10.2023

Jeff Landry, Louisiana's hard-line conservative attorney general, emerged victorious in the state's crowded gubernatorial race on Saturday, securing Republican control of Louisiana following eight years of divided government. Landry's win, which surprised many political observers, came in the "jungle primary," where candidates of any political affiliation face off against each other. With more than 50 percent of the vote, Landry avoided a runoff election and will replace outgoing Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards.

Landry's victory ensures a far-right government for Louisiana, a state where Republicans have controlled the Legislature for the past decade but have faced resistance from Governor Edwards, who vetoed several bills targeting L.G.B.T.Q. individuals. This comes at a time when Louisiana is grappling with soaring insurance rates and a declining population.

The race featured a field of over a dozen candidates, including Democrats, independents, and rival Republicans. Landry's ability to secure a majority vote seemed unlikely given the crowded field. However, he managed to win with 51.6 percent of the vote, while Democrat Shawn Wilson, the state's former transportation secretary, secured 25.9 percent. None of the other candidates reached double digits.

Landry, known for his confrontational style and litigation against Democratic policies, has been a fierce opponent of Governor Edwards and the Biden administration. He has challenged vaccine and mask mandates, restrictions on social media companies, and environmental regulations. His combative conservatism has earned him support from the Republican base, as he has championed their causes and fought against perceived government overreach.

During his campaign, Landry vowed to tackle crime in the state, despite it falling under the jurisdiction of the attorney general rather than the governor. He also pledged to combat the "woke agenda" in Louisiana schools and support parents' rights to make decisions for their children. These promises appealed to his base, but critics argue that they may be too extreme for the state.

Landry's dominance in the race dampened the typically lively political atmosphere in Louisiana, leaving other candidates to vie for second place in the primary. If no candidate had secured more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two contenders would have advanced to a runoff election in November.

The outcome of the election reflects Louisiana's shift towards nationalized issues that divide along urban and rural lines. It also highlights the state's struggle with population decline, brain drain, and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Landry's victory solidifies Republican control in Louisiana, with the party already holding a supermajority in the state House and Senate. As he assumes office, it is expected that Landry will steer the state further to the right on issues such as crime, the environment, and L.G.B.T.Q. rights.
