US 'dedicated' to helping Americans leave Gaza through Egypt amid Israel-Hamas war: Sullivan

15:24 15.10.2023

The United States is intensifying its efforts to facilitate the safe exit of Palestinian-Americans from Gaza amid rising tensions in the region, according to White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. Sullivan stated that ensuring the safety of American citizens in Gaza is a top priority for the Biden administration. The US government is working around the clock to provide safe passage for American citizens out of Gaza and into Egypt. Sullivan emphasized that they will not rest until all American citizens have been safely evacuated.

In addition to assisting American citizens, US officials are also taking steps to provide critical resources to the broader civilian population in Gaza. This includes access to safe areas, as well as essential supplies such as food, water, shelter, and medicine. The majority of Palestinians in Gaza are not affiliated with Hamas, the militant group responsible for the recent escalation of violence. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure their well-being during this crisis.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas is expected to intensify as Israel prepares for a potential ground operation in Gaza. Israeli airstrikes have been relentless since October 7, when Hamas orchestrated a terror attack on Israel. As of Sunday, the Israeli military reported that the attacks have killed over 1,300 people and injured at least 3,200 others. Among the casualties are 29 American citizens, with 15 others and one US permanent resident still unaccounted for.

At the same time, the Gaza Health Ministry has reported that Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 2,329 people, including 724 children, and wounded another 9,714 individuals. The situation in Gaza is dire, with hospitals running out of basic supplies and fuel for generators. Authorities warn that thousands of people could die if immediate action is not taken.

The United States has deployed more military power to the eastern Mediterranean, partly due to concerns about wider regional conflict and the threat of Iran's involvement. However, Sullivan clarified that there has been no specific intelligence indicating a change in the threat level. Nevertheless, the US is sending a clear message of deterrence to any state or actor that might exploit the situation.

In addition to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, tensions have also risen between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese group backed by Iran. Sullivan expressed concern about the involvement of proxy forces in the region, citing Hezbollah and recent skirmishes along the Israeli-Lebanese border. While the focus remains on Gaza, authorities are preparing for every possible contingency, including direct engagement by Iran.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening, with the United Nations estimating that almost a million residents have been displaced since the start of the war. Palestinians are rushing to leave northern Gaza following Israel's instructions to evacuate the area immediately. However, the Rafah border crossing into Egypt, the only exit from Gaza, remains closed. The US is working closely with Israeli Defense Forces and security services to stay informed about their plans for a ground operation.

The State Department has been in communication with US citizens requesting assistance in leaving Gaza. However, the exact number of Americans who have successfully left Gaza has not been released. The situation remains fluid, and any opening of the Rafah gate may occur with little notice and be limited in duration.

Ultimately, Israel's definition of success is the long-term safety and security of the Jewish state and its people. This includes eliminating the threat posed by Hamas. Israel is working to dismantle the terror infrastructure in Gaza through aerial campaigns, with potential operations on the ground in the future.

The US government is actively engaged in efforts to de-escalate the conflict, provide humanitarian aid, and ensure the safe evacuation of American citizens from Gaza. President Biden has emphasized the need for Israel to consider the well-being of Palestinian civilians during its military operations. The situation remains highly complex and volatile, but the US remains committed to working towards a peaceful resolution.
