FBI Director: Surge in Domestic Threats Following Israel-Hamas Conflict

17:03 15.10.2023

Threats in the U.S. have been steadily increasing since the conflict between Hamas and Israel began a week ago, according to FBI Director Christopher Wray and other officials. In a rare phone briefing for reporters on Sunday, Wray emphasized that the threat is ongoing and evolving. He expressed concern that foreign terrorist organizations like Hamas could exploit the conflict to incite attacks on U.S. soil. Both Jews and Muslims, along with their institutions and places of worship, have reportedly faced threats in the U.S. In response, the FBI is working swiftly to address and mitigate these threats.

During a speech at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in San Diego on Saturday, Wray highlighted the rise in reported threats and urged police chiefs to remain vigilant. He emphasized the need to watch out for lone actors who might be inspired by recent events to commit acts of violence. Wray stressed that the public plays a crucial role in addressing this type of threat, as lone wolf-style assailants often go unnoticed by law enforcement. He stated that the FBI's priority is countering terrorism and that violence driven by hate and extremism will not be tolerated.

The FBI has been actively working to address the threats through their Joint Terrorism Task Forces. Wray mentioned that there have been threats targeting both Muslim and Jewish facilities, indicating a surge in anti-Semitic sentiments. The FBI director condemned the brutality committed by Hamas and expressed condolences to the people of Israel. He also highlighted the bureau's efforts to locate and identify all Americans affected by the conflict, including those who remain unaccounted for. Victim services specialists are providing support to victims and their families both domestically and internationally.

Wray's warning about the increase in threats came at a time when major U.S. cities, such as New York, were on heightened security due to concerns over related demonstrations. A former Hamas leader had called for Muslims worldwide to take to the streets and observe October 13 as a "Day of Jihad." While the FBI does not currently possess specific and credible intelligence indicating a threat to the United States, they are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with their counterparts in the region and international partners. The bureau is prepared to adjust its security posture as necessary to protect public safety.

Overall, the rising threats in the U.S. following the Hamas invasion of Israel have prompted the FBI to take action swiftly. Their focus is on mitigating potential violence, particularly from lone actors, and ensuring the safety of both Jewish and Muslim communities. With the conflict ongoing, the FBI is working tirelessly to address threats, locate affected Americans, and provide support to victims and their families.
