Can New York's mayor speak Mandarin? No, but with AI he's making robocalls in different languages

00:41 19.10.2023

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing criticism for his use of artificial intelligence (AI) to make robocalls in languages he doesn't actually speak. Adams admitted to using audio deepfakes to call residents in languages such as Spanish and Mandarin in order to promote local events like recruitment fairs and concerts. The calls, generated using voice tech firm ElevenLabs, have reached over four million people so far. While some residents have expressed excitement over hearing the mayor speaking in their own language, critics argue that the calls are unethical and misleading. Albert Fox Cahn, from the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, described the calls as a "creepy vanity project" and raised concerns about the potential misuse of AI. However, Adams defended his use of the technology, stating that it allows him to reach New Yorkers in the languages they understand. The growing use of AI and deepfakes in politics and election misinformation has led to calls for greater regulation from both government and major media companies. While some technology companies have introduced AI tools for language translation and synthesis, concerns remain about the potential for deceptive use of AI-generated content. Adams' robocalls have further highlighted the ethical questions surrounding the use of AI by government entities. Despite the criticism, Adams stated that he will continue to utilize AI tools and introduced a new chatbot service to assist small business owners, powered by Microsoft technology. As the debate surrounding the ethical use of AI continues, regulators are grappling with how best to navigate this rapidly evolving technology.
