Hurricane Norma and Tammy threaten resort destinations in Mexico and Atlantic islands

00:44 21.10.2023

Hurricane Norma and Hurricane Tammy are both posing threats to different parts of the world, with Norma headed towards Los Cabos in Mexico's Baja California Peninsula and Tammy heading for the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic. The residents of Los Cabos have been rushing to prepare for the incoming storm, with businesses nailing up sheets of plywood over windows and government personnel hanging up warning banners. Baja California Sur Governor Victor Manuel Castro has urged people to stay at home and not venture out after a certain time in the evening. The Category 3 storm, Norma, has maximum sustained winds of 120 mph and is centered about 145 miles south of Cabo San Lucas. It is moving at a speed of 9 mph and its outer bands of rain are already reaching the Baja peninsula.

In Los Cabos, hotels are still three-quarters full with foreign tourists and there has been no major move by visitors to leave, according to the Baja California Sur state tourism secretary Maribel Collins. Flights have been canceled as the rain has already started falling in the area, and airports will be closed on Saturday. It is estimated that there are still around 40,000 tourists in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. With the local port closed to navigation and a hurricane looming, businesses and individuals are taking precautions to protect themselves and their assets. Jose Cese?±a, who usually uses his boat for tourist tours, has decided to haul it out of the water, not willing to risk any damage. The local National Guard has been sent to clear people from the seashore and beaches have been ordered closed.

The federal government has posted 500 marines to the resort to assist with storm preparations, and up to 39 emergency shelters could be opened if needed. A hurricane warning has been issued for the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, and the weakened Norma is expected to move towards the mainland of Mexico's western Pacific coast as a tropical storm. However, it is not expected to weaken as much as originally forecasted. Meanwhile, Hurricane Tammy is approaching the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic and has winds of 80 mph. Hurricane warnings have been issued for the islands of Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, and St. Kitts and Nevis. The storm is expected to remain at hurricane strength and potentially strengthen further as it moves towards the Lesser Antilles. Heavy rainfall and flooding are likely over much of the Lesser Antilles.

The concerns surrounding both hurricanes are the significant winds and heavy rain that could potentially cause damage and flooding. While residents and tourists in Los Cabos are taking necessary precautions, the focus is on ensuring the safety of everyone in the affected areas. Evacuations have started in some low-lying areas away from the coastal tourist zone, and the Pacific coast port of Manzanillo has been closed to small craft as a precaution. Classes have also been canceled in Baja California Sur state.

As both hurricanes approach land, the authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates to ensure the safety of the affected communities.
