Biden, others, welcome the release of an American mother and daughter held hostage by Hamas

04:27 21.10.2023

In a heartwarming turn of events, 17-year-old Natalie Raanan and her mother Judith, both US citizens, have been released by Hamas after being held hostage in Gaza for two weeks. Natalie's father, Uri Raanan, expressed his overwhelming joy, calling it the "best day of my life." Speaking from Evanston, Illinois, Uri Raanan revealed that he was brought to tears upon learning of his daughter's release and described her as "doing good...very good." He eagerly anticipated the moment he would be able to hug her, stating that it would be a day he would never forget.

The Raanans were released to the Red Cross and are now under the care of the Israeli military. A photograph, released by the Israeli government, showed the mother and daughter accompanied by Israeli soldiers after crossing the border. This release was confirmed by President Joe Biden, who expressed his gratitude to the governments of Qatar and Israel for their assistance in securing the freedom of American citizens held by Hamas. President Biden emphasized that the safety of Americans held hostage around the world is a top priority for his administration.

The mother and daughter were visiting Israel from Illinois when they were taken captive during Hamas' terror attack earlier this month. They were staying in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, near Gaza, when Hamas launched a deadly raid, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,400 people and the abduction of scores more. While Israel claims that Judith and Natalie were among around 200 people taken hostage, Hamas contests this figure, asserting that it is higher.

The release of the Raanans came ahead of an expected ground assault by the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza, a region currently facing a humanitarian crisis due to days of heavy bombing. Gaza's health ministry reported that over 4,000 individuals, including many children, have been killed since Israel initiated retaliatory strikes against Hamas. The densely populated area has experienced severe shortages of water, food, and electricity, prompting thousands of Palestinians to flee south after an Israeli evacuation order for the north was issued. Finally, on Saturday morning, trucks carrying aid were allowed to pass through Egypt's Rafah crossing into Gaza, alleviating some of the critical shortages faced by the Palestinian population.

The US Embassy advised foreign citizens to take advantage of the open crossing and leave Gaza, as it remained uncertain how long it would remain accessible. Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross described the release of Judith and Natalie Raanan as a glimmer of hope for those still held hostage. Family members and community leaders expressed their relief and gratitude for the safe return of the Raanans, while also calling for the release of the remaining hostages.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and US Senator Tammy Duckworth shared their relief at the news of the Raanans' release, urging people to remember the other families still awaiting the return of their loved ones. Meir Hecht, Judith Raanan's rabbi, expressed his overwhelming gratitude for the miraculous turn of events and called for continued efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages. Qatar affirmed its commitment to dialogue with Israel and Hamas, with the goal of de-escalating the crisis and restoring peace. Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that Israel would continue its mission to return the hostages and locate the missing individuals, emphasizing that their goals had not changed and that they were prepared for the next stage of the conflict.

This remarkable story of hope amidst adversity serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength exhibited by individuals and communities in the face of unthinkable terror. The safe return of Natalie and Judith Raanan brings a glimmer of hope to the families still awaiting their loved ones' release and serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of governments and organizations to prioritize the safety and well-being of their citizens.
