US candy prices soar for second consecutive Halloween

16:31 28.10.2023

In a disappointing turn of events for Halloween enthusiasts, the price of candy has once again surged, marking the second consecutive year of double-digit inflation in the candy aisle. According to Datasembly, a retail price tracker, the average price of candy and gum has spiked by 13% this month compared to last October, more than double the 6% increase in overall grocery prices. This follows a 14% surge in candy and gum prices in October 2022, leaving consumers grappling with the soaring costs.

The exorbitant prices have led many individuals, like Jessica Weathers, a small business owner from Shiloh, Illinois, to express their dismay. Weathers, who usually goes all out in her candy purchases for trick-or-treaters and events at school and church, is now feeling the pinch. "The price of candy has gotten to be outrageous," she exclaimed, adding, "It doesn't make sense to me to spend $100 on candy." In light of the price hike, Weathers reluctantly decided to only purchase two bags of candy this year and plans to turn off her porch light on Halloween once she runs out.

Weathers is not alone in her cost-cutting measures. According to surveys conducted by Numerator, approximately one-third of U.S. consumers intend to opt for value or store brands while shopping for candy to distribute to trick-or-treaters this year. The soaring prices have compelled consumers to reevaluate their choices and seek more affordable alternatives.

Weather conditions, predominantly in West Africa, have played a significant role in the relentless surge in candy prices. Last year's heavy rains in the region led to limited cocoa production, subsequently impacting cocoa prices. Now, El Nino conditions are exacerbating the situation, causing the region to become drier and prolonging the adverse effects. "There may be no price relief in sight, at least through the first half of 2024," warned Dan Sadler, principal of client insights for Circana, a market research firm.

Kelly Goughary, a senior research analyst with Gro Intelligence, an agricultural analytics firm, highlighted the dire situation in Ivory Coast, which accounts for approximately 40% of global cocoa production. Goughary noted that the country is currently experiencing one of its worst droughts since 2003. Additionally, global sugar prices have soared to 12-year highs, with India, the second-largest sugar producer after Brazil, recently imposing a ban on sugar exports due to the adverse impact of monsoon rains on the upcoming harvest. Thailand's sugar output has also been reduced. These factors, coupled with rising costs for labor, packaging, and ingredients like peanuts, have collectively contributed to the surge in candy prices.

The repercussions of these skyrocketing prices are not limited to consumers alone. Hershey Co., a leading confectionery company, has been compelled to raise its prices by 7% or more for seven consecutive quarters. Unfortunately, the consequences of these price increases are now evident, with Hershey's North American confectionary sales volumes plummeting by 1% in the July-September period. Recognizing the concern surrounding affordability, Hershey's President and CEO, Michele Buck, emphasized the company's commitment to meeting consumers' needs through value offerings and various price points in both value stores and pack sizes.

As Halloween approaches, the increased prices of candies are undoubtedly dampening the spirits of many. With inflationary pressures persisting and weather conditions showing no signs of improvement, consumers may need to brace themselves for continued hikes in candy prices. The holiday may not be as sweet as it once was, leaving many to question the increasing costs and ponder whether indulging in their favorite treats is worth the dent in their budgets.
