Police evict Airbnb 'squatter' after 575-day stay

18:01 07.11.2023

In a shocking turn of events, a woman in Los Angeles managed to stay in an Airbnb for a staggering 575 days without paying rent. Elizabeth Hirschhorn, 55, was finally evicted from the luxurious $3.5 million Brentwood home she had been occupying since September 2021. The news of her eviction was initially reported by the Daily Mail.

According to reports, Hirschhorn had originally booked a six-month stay in the property's luxury guesthouse. However, once the lease term ended, she decided to squat in the property citing Covid-19 concerns and an illegally built shower as her reasons for staying. Homeowner Sascha Jovanovic, 61, attempted to legally evict her but faced a countersuit in response. Hirschhorn demanded a staggering $100,000 to vacate the property.

The situation took a dramatic turn when the former tenant and three male friends were seen carrying boxes out of the property and loading them into a white van. Alarmed by their presence, Jovanovic promptly contacted the Los Angeles Police Department, who then oversaw Hirschhorn's departure. The relief was palpable for Jovanovic, with him expressing his emotions by stating, "I'm very relieved and also a bit overwhelmed. It was a long time coming but now she is finally out! This weekend is going to be very positive."

However, the saga did not end there. After Hirschhorn's departure, Jovanovic immediately had the locks changed to prevent her from returning. But her attorney, Amanda Seward, informed the landlord's legal team that Hirschhorn planned on coming back to the residence and accused Jovanovic of harassment. Seward insisted that Jovanovic had no authority to change the locks or assume abandonment of the property, citing discussions with her client regarding repairs and the alleged constant harassment and surveillance.

In response, Sebastian Rucci, Jovanovic's attorney, clarified that they had changed the locks once Hirschhorn left and that her lawyer's claim of intention to return came later. Rucci made it clear that Hirschhorn was not allowed back and that she would have to go to court to regain possession of the property.

In a surprising development, Mr. Rucci filed a notice of voluntary dismissal of prejudice in Los Angeles County Superior Court, leading to a judge ruling to dismiss the eviction case against Hirschhorn. However, a case for damages against the 55-year-old is still pending.

This bizarre and contentious situation has left both parties grappling with the aftermath. While Hirschhorn has been removed from the property, the legal battle for damages lingers on. The intricacies of this case highlight the challenges faced by landlords and tenants in such unique circumstances, underscoring the importance of clear contractual agreements and strong legal representation.
