Suspect 'cooperative' in homicide investigation of Jewish man who died after fall at dueling protests

03:56 08.11.2023

The death of a 69-year-old Jewish man during dueling Israel-Hamas war protests in Thousand Oaks, California has sparked a homicide investigation and raised concerns about hate-motivated attacks. Paul Kessler was engaged in a confrontation with a pro-Palestinian protester when he fell and suffered a fatal head injury, according to authorities. Ventura County Sheriff Jim Fryhoff stated that they are still trying to determine the exact cause of the fall and are urging the public to come forward with any evidence, such as videos or photos, that could help with the investigation.

Kessler's death occurred during one of the many protests that have been taking place across the US in support of Israel or to protest its retaliation for the October 7 Hamas attacks. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Israel's military offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 people in Gaza. The circumstances surrounding Kessler's fall are still unclear, but investigators have interviewed witnesses who provided conflicting accounts of the altercation.

The suspect involved in the confrontation has been cooperative with investigators and called 911 to seek medical help for Kessler. Despite this, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime and are still investigating the incident. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was briefly detained and his residence was searched. However, he was later released and no arrests have been made as of Tuesday afternoon.

The medical examiner ruled Kessler's cause of death as a blunt force head trauma, consistent with a fall. While the manner of death is classified as a homicide, it does not necessarily imply criminal intent. The district attorney's office will ultimately determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

Local government officials and community leaders from both the Jewish and Muslim communities have condemned violence and called for patience during the investigation. The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles expressed their sympathy for Kessler's family and demanded safety for the Jewish community. The Council on American-Islamic Relations also expressed their condolences and urged individuals to refrain from spreading rumors or inciting hatred.

In response to the incident, the sheriff's office has increased patrols around both Muslim and Jewish houses of worship and community centers. The FBI is also in communication with the sheriff's office to determine the circumstances surrounding Kessler's death. The tensions from the ongoing Israel-Hamas war have heightened concerns about potential hate crimes and violence in the US.

Kessler was described as a passionate individual who frequently voiced his opinions through letters to local newspapers. He was known for his involvement in progressive causes and attended various demonstrations. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass addressed Kessler's death, stating that it is a blow to the region and emphasizing the need for accountability and consequences for violence and hate.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information or evidence related to the incident to come forward to assist in determining the cause of Kessler's fall and the events leading up to his death.
