Biden team disregards polls, celebrates election night victories

21:17 08.11.2023

A recent New York Times/Siena College poll has shown that President Joe Biden is trailing behind Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in five out of six battleground states, raising concerns about his re-election bid in 2024. This comes as the American economy continues to strengthen and Biden secures policy victories. However, Trump's legal troubles seem to overshadow his chances of winning against Biden. The Democratic Party has also been successful in recent elections, with voters showing support for abortion rights in states like Ohio, Virginia, and Kentucky. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether Biden's fate is tied to down-ballot candidates or specific issues.

In Ohio, where abortion access and marijuana legalization both won, and in Pennsylvania, where a Democratic State Supreme Court justice secured a victory, Trump appears to have an advantage in several polls. Virginia, on the other hand, is leaning towards Biden, as Democrats flipped control of the House of Delegates and maintained control of the Senate. However, it is worth noting that Democrats have won the last several presidential elections in Virginia. While abortion rights have proven to be a winning issue for Democrats, it is unclear if it will be on the ballot in swing states next November, such as Arizona.

The polls showing Biden's weakness against Trump are worrisome, especially considering that other recent polls from CBS News and ABC News/Ipsos also reveal troubling signs for Biden. David Axelrod, a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, raised concerns about whether Biden's decision to run for re-election is in his best interest or the country's. Axelrod emphasized the importance of not ignoring the erosion of Biden's support among key demographic groups necessary for securing a victory.

The polls indicate that Biden is losing ground among younger, nonwhite, and less engaged voters. Concerns about his age, economic stewardship, and appeal to young, Black, and Hispanic voters have grown severe enough to potentially imperil his re-election chances. While the economy is improving, many people fail to see or feel its effects, leading to a disconnect in the data. Biden's age is also a concern, as attempts to signal youth and vitality may come across as ridiculous. Additionally, there is growing dissatisfaction among young minorities, exacerbated by the ongoing war in Gaza, which could impact their support for Biden.

However, despite the low popularity reflected in recent polls, the strong showing by Democrats in off-year elections brings a sense of vindication to the White House and the Biden campaign. Democratic incumbent Governor Andy Beshear's victory in Kentucky, the passage of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion rights in Ohio, and Democratic wins in Pennsylvania demonstrate the overall strength of the Democratic Party's positions. These results reinforce the message that Democrats, not Republicans, will protect Americans' personal rights.

Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on the White House driveway to highlight the importance of abortion rights and the Democrats' commitment to protecting personal freedoms. She emphasized that the government should not be dictating decisions about a woman's body. Biden, who faces no serious primary challengers, has already raised significant amounts of money for his re-election campaign, surpassing former President Donald Trump's fundraising efforts.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre downplayed the significance of polls, citing misleading predictions in the 2020 midterms. She argued that the election results bolster Biden's argument that his policies matter most. Harris echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in their ability to win re-election while acknowledging the work that lies ahead.

Overall, the polls indicate a challenging road ahead for Biden in his re-election bid. While the American economy continues to grow and the Democratic Party secures victories on key issues, Biden's weakness in the polls and concerns about his age, economic stewardship, and appeal to young and minority voters raise doubts about his ability to secure another term as president.
