Terminally ill UK baby gets more time to live as parents fight judge to bring her to Vatican hospital

17:49 11.11.2023

In a heart-wrenching case that has gained international attention, the United Kingdom's courts have once again ruled against the parents of 8-month-old Indi Gregory, who suffers from a degenerative mitochondrial disease. Justice Robert Peel mandated that the infant be taken off life support against the wishes of her parents, Dean and Claire Gregory. The Gregorys, represented by Christian Concern, expressed their disgust at the one-sided decision and vowed to continue fighting for their daughter's chance to live.

However, the Italian government and the Vatican have stepped in to offer a glimmer of hope for the Gregory family. The Italian government has granted citizenship to Indi, allowing her to receive continued treatment in Italy. Additionally, the Vatican has arranged for Indi to be cared for at Bambino Ges??, a Catholic pediatric hospital in Rome. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has been a strong advocate for Indi, is urging international cooperation and has contacted the UK's Lord Chancellor to intervene in the case.

The Gregorys have successfully launched an appeal against the mandate to remove their daughter from life support. The Court of Appeals will hear their case on November 10th, suspending the decision to take Indi off life support. This has bought the family more time and hope for a resolution that allows them to seek continued treatment overseas. Doctors at Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham, where Indi is currently receiving treatment, will not be permitted to remove her from life support until the appeals process is concluded.

Christian Concern, a religious legal group, has been fighting for the Gregorys' rights and believes that the international nature of the case will put pressure on the UK courts to reconsider their decision. They argue that the involvement of the Italian government and the Vatican in securing Indi's citizenship and arranging her treatment abroad is unprecedented in an end-of-life case involving a child in the UK.

The Gregorys remain determined to do what is in Indi's best interests and to exhaust every possible option to give their daughter a chance at life. The world watches as this heartbreaking battle unfolds, hoping for a resolution that allows for Indi to receive the best treatment possible and for her parents' wishes to be respected.
