Suspect Arrested in Death of Jewish Protester at California Rally

11:46 17.11.2023

In a developing story, a suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of Paul Kessler, a Jewish protester who fell after a confrontation at dueling rallies in California for Israel and Palestinians. Loay Alnaji, a 50-year-old man from Moorpark, has been taken into custody and will be charged with involuntary manslaughter. The incident occurred on November 5 in Thousand Oaks, California, where Kessler was participating in a pro-Israel gathering. During the event, he engaged in a physical altercation with a pro-Palestinian protester, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the ground. Kessler was hospitalized and died the following day.

The arrest of Alnaji comes after conflicting witness statements made it difficult for authorities to piece together the events leading to Kessler's fall. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office had previously interviewed a 50-year-old man at the scene, who called 911 for medical help. While his name was not released during the investigation, it is unclear whether this individual is Alnaji. A search was conducted at the suspect's Moorpark home, but further details have not been provided.

Kessler's death has deeply impacted the local Jewish community in California, raising concerns about safety in light of rising reports of antisemitic incidents. The Anti-Defamation League has reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack, which killed an estimated 1,200 people and left 239 hostages in the Gaza Strip. The attack marked the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust and coincided with a surge in reports of antisemitism worldwide.

As tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East, protests in support of or against Israel's military response to the attack have been taking place across the United States. The simultaneous rallies in Thousand Oaks where Kessler's death occurred were organized by two groups, "Freedom for Palestine" and "We are Pro-Israel." Approximately 75 to 100 people were estimated to be present during the confrontations.

While the investigation into Kessler's death is ongoing, authorities have urged individuals with any information or video evidence of the incident to come forward. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office will determine whether to pursue any additional charges against Alnaji.

In the midst of this tragedy, friends and acquaintances remember Kessler as an ardent Democrat with a sharp wit who loved engaging in political discourse. He was an active contributor to local newspapers, consistently writing letters for over 20 years. Kessler's death has prompted calls for patience and a thorough investigation, urging the community to refrain from jumping to conclusions and avoiding the further escalation of tensions.

As the story develops, updates will be provided.
