Scandal-ridden Golden Globes find new home at CBS for 2024

19:20 17.11.2023

In a surprising turn of events for the Golden Globes, CBS has become the new broadcast home for the prestigious awards show. This comes after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was dissolved following years of scandal, and NBC ended its long-standing partnership with the Globes. CBS announced on Friday that the 81st Golden Globes will be aired live on their network and will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ and the CBS app.

The terms of the deal between CBS and the Golden Globes have not been disclosed, leaving many curious about the specifics, including the duration of the agreement. NBC had previously aired the 2023 Globes on a one-year basis after the 2022 edition was essentially canceled due to the revelation that the HFPA had no Black members. This led to widespread boycotts by stars and studios, although they eventually returned for this year's awards. Despite their return, NBC opted not to renew their contract after the 2023 broadcast, which was held on a Tuesday evening and saw a near-record low of 6.3 million viewers according to Nielsen.

Since the scandal involving the lack of diversity within the HFPA, the organization has undergone a reorganization and no longer exists by name. Earlier this year, the rights and properties to the Globes were acquired by Dick Clark Productions, a property of Penske Media, and Eldridge Industries, a holding company owned by billionaire investor Todd Boehly. A newly formed, for-profit organization will now be responsible for voting on the awards.

This will not be the first time that CBS has aired the Golden Globes. The network previously broadcasted the award show in 1981 and 1982 before it found a home on NBC for many years. CBS, known for also broadcasting the Grammys, expressed its excitement about hosting the Golden Globes in its statement. George Cheeks, the president and CEO of CBS, emphasized the network's commitment to live entertainment and sports, stating that the addition of the Globes adds an exciting new dimension to their first quarter schedule this year.

The decision for CBS to host the Golden Globes comes as a significant shift after the scandals and boycotts that plagued the award show in recent years. In 2022, the Los Angeles Times investigation exposed the lack of diversity within the HFPA, leading to widespread condemnation and boycotts. The show's reputation as a boozy dinner-party atmosphere was tarnished further as additional allegations of ethical improprieties within the association came to light. As a result, the HFPA sold the award show to Eldridge Industries, dissolving the nonprofit and its membership, and turning the event into a for-profit venture.

The Golden Globes is an internationally renowned awards ceremony that has been held since 1944. It has grown to be viewed in 185 countries around the world, showcasing the best in film and television. CBS, as part of Paramount Global, which also owns CBS News, is undoubtedly thrilled to have the opportunity to host such a prestigious event and is looking forward to bringing it to audiences worldwide.
