Mass revolt at OpenAI as CEO Sam Altman lands Microsoft job

11:26 20.11.2023

In a shocking turn of events, OpenAI's chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, has expressed deep regret over his participation in the board's actions that led to Sam Altman's firing. Sutskever took to X to write a heartfelt message, stating that he never intended to harm OpenAI and loves everything they have built together. He pledged to do everything in his power to reunite the company.

This change of heart comes just three days after Altman, a key figure in turning OpenAI into an artificial intelligence powerhouse, was forced out of the company. The board cited Altman's lack of consistent candor in his communications with them as the reason for his departure. The company's blog post, however, was light on specific details surrounding the decision.

Altman himself took to X to express his love for his time at OpenAI, calling it a transformative experience for him personally and for the world. He also hinted at future plans but did not elaborate further.

Negotiations over the weekend failed, confirming Altman's departure on Sunday afternoon. By Monday morning, OpenAI had named former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as interim CEO. Altman and Brockman wasted no time in securing a new gig, leading an AI research team at Microsoft.

However, it seems that Altman and Brockman may not be the only ones leaving OpenAI. Over 500 of the company's 700 employees have signed a letter demanding the resignation of the current board members. They threatened to join Altman and Brockman at Microsoft's newly announced subsidiary if their demands are not met. Microsoft has assured the employees that there are positions available for them at the subsidiary.

The employees' letter accuses the board of lacking competence, judgment, and care for the company's mission and employees. They also called for the appointment of two new lead independent directors, suggesting Bret Taylor and Will Hurd as potential candidates.

According to reports, more than dozens of OpenAI staffers had already quit in protest of Altman's dismissal, further exacerbating the situation. OpenAI's interim CEO, Emmett Shear, has pledged to order an independent investigation into the events leading to Altman's firing and to overhaul the company's management and leadership team. Shear acknowledged the mishandling of the situation and the damage it caused to trust within the company.

Meanwhile, Altman's firing has created a wave of solidarity among OpenAI employees, leading to a mass exodus. Altman's future at the company had been uncertain, with speculation about his possible return after he posted a photo of himself wearing an OpenAI guest pass. However, Microsoft's CEO confirmed Altman's appointment to lead a new advanced AI research team at the tech giant.

The departure of Altman prompted OpenAI president Greg Brockman to resign in support. Former Twitch CEO, Emmett Shear, has been appointed as the new interim CEO. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed his excitement about working with Shear and OpenAI's new leadership team, suggesting a strong partnership between the two companies.

It is clear that the situation at OpenAI is still unfolding, and Shear will have his work cut out for him as he attempts to salvage the company's reputation and mend relationships with remaining staffers. The fallout from Altman's firing and the demand for board resignations will undoubtedly continue to make headlines.
