Minnesota's Rutt the moose captivates fans with epic journey

The elusive moose known as Rutt has become an online sensation, captivating social media users as they track his travels across the state of Minnesota. This majestic moose, lovingly dubbed Rutt after a character in the Disney movie Brother Bear, has been roaming Southern Minnesota, an area where moose rarely venture. His journey began in October when he crossed the border from northwestern Iowa into Minnesota, which is quite south for his species. From there, Rutt gradually made his way north, capturing the attention of residents and nature enthusiasts alike.

Todd Froberg, a big game program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, stated that moose typically stick to the northern part of the state. Therefore, Rutt's expedition to the south is incredibly rare. Moose that venture outside their usual habitats often suffer from parasitic infections, such as "brain worm," which can have severe health consequences. However, Mr. Froberg noted that Rutt seems to be in good condition.

Rutt's popularity skyrocketed after Brenda Johnson, a Minnesota resident, created a Facebook page dedicated to spotting moose. Initially established in 2018 to track another moose's adventures, the page fell silent after the tragic incident of the previous moose being struck by a semi-truck while crossing a highway. However, followers were delighted when Rutt appeared and took center stage on the moose-spotting page.

As Rutt's journey continued, his loyal fans anxiously awaited updates, particularly when he was expected to cross Interstate 94. Concerns arose that he might meet the same fate as the previous moose. Thankfully, Rutt survived the highway crossing and continued onward, appearing 140 miles northwest of Minneapolis on Tuesday. It was believed that he was trying to reach cooler temperatures.

For Danielle Magnuson, searching for Rutt became a source of distraction from the stresses of daily life. Her persistence paid off when she finally spotted him on November 13 near Sauk Creek. Magnuson described the experience as seeing a unicorn, emphasizing the rarity and beauty of these creatures, especially in her area.

Barb Keller, a staff member at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, reminded residents that shooting moose in the state is illegal and urged everyone to keep a safe distance from these gigantic animals. Moose can be dangerous, and while it is encouraged to take pictures and videos, approaching them should be avoided.

Brenda Johnson's Facebook page now boasts over 27,000 followers, all eagerly tracking Rutt's route and connecting with fellow moose enthusiasts. The page serves as a hub for updates and discussions about all things moose.

As Rutt's journey continues, his herd of followers remains hopeful that this majestic moose will safely find his way home. They marvel at the joy and hope he brings to people who may not have had the opportunity to witness a moose in their lifetime.
