Mysterious disappearance of 200-foot radio tower leaves Alabama station silenced

16:42 11.02.2024

Thieves in Jasper, Alabama, have left a small community without its local radio station after stealing a 200-foot tower and other equipment from WJLX radio. The theft has resulted in the station being ordered off air by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), causing significant disruption to the community it serves. The theft was discovered on February 2nd when a maintenance crew arrived at the site and found the tower missing. The thieves also stole all of the broadcasting equipment stored in a nearby building. WJLX General Manager Brett Elmore suspects that the tower's guy wire was cut, causing the structure to fall, before it was dismantled and taken away. Elmore estimates that it will cost between $60,000 to $100,000 to replace the tower, but the station does not have insurance to cover the theft. Despite the setback, Elmore remains determined to get the station back on air and has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for a replacement tower. The theft has gained national attention, with people from around the country offering support. Jasper police are investigating the incident and are seeking tips from the public. Elmore remains hopeful that the station will recover and continue to serve the community.
