Convicted drug trafficker "El Mago," who was linked to the infamous Sinaloa cartel, shot dead in LA: authorities

A notorious drug trafficker with ties to the son of incarcerated kingpin El Chapo was shot dead in Los Angeles County on Thanksgiving morning, according to authorities. Eduardo Escobedo, also known as El Mago or "The Magician," was one of two men killed in the incident that took place in Willowbrook. The other victim was identified as Guillermo De Los Angeles Jr., a convicted drug dealer.

The shooting occurred after the Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about shots being fired in the area. Both Escobedo and De Los Angeles were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third man, who remains unidentified, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Escobedo, a native of East Los Angeles, rose to prominence as the primary local distributor of marijuana to Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, the eldest son of "El Chapo." Reports suggest that he also played a role in laundering the drug earnings by purchasing luxury cars and shipping them to Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa, where the cartel operated.

Despite spending nearly five years in federal prison for his involvement in conspiring to distribute over 22,000 pounds of marijuana, Escobedo was released in 2018. He allegedly ordered the murder of a rival drug trafficker in 2008, but was never charged in relation to the incident. However, his brother and another individual were convicted and are currently serving life sentences.

Escobedo's extravagant lifestyle and connections became evident through his social media presence. He frequently posted photos with celebrities such as Al Pacino and Floyd Mayweather, showcasing an opulent lifestyle with flashy tracksuits and a diamond-encrusted Richard Mille watch. In one photo, he can be seen holding a duffel bag filled with money, while another shows him posing with a member of the Mexican Mafia and a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne.

Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind the killings, but it is believed that the gathering or party at the location may have played a role. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are working to establish any potential connections between the victims and the larger drug cartel network. Meanwhile, Guzman Salazar remains one of Mexico's most wanted individuals.
