Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend the temporary cease-fire in Gaza for another day, according to Qatari mediators. The agreement was reached just before the truce was set to expire at 7 a.m. local time on Thursday. The negotiations had been stalled over disagreements about the list of Israeli hostages to be released by Hamas, but the parties were able to reach a deal minutes before the deadline. The Qatari Foreign Ministry announced that the cease-fire would continue for another day under the same terms previously arranged. As part of the agreement, Hamas will release 10 hostages who were abducted from Israel on October 7 in exchange for the release of 30 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons and a pause in airstrikes. The main point of contention in the negotiations was which hostages Hamas would release, with the group initially proposing to release seven living hostages and three bodies of individuals they claimed were killed in previous Israeli airstrikes. However, Israel rejected the proposal and Hamas later presented an improved list, which Israel agreed to. The prisoner exchanges in recent days have primarily involved the release of women and children, but as the number of women and children under Hamas' control decreases, negotiations are expected to become more challenging. It is anticipated that the militant group will demand greater terms if Israel wants the release of male hostages and soldiers. The temporary pause in fighting may continue for another day or two as Israel faces significant international pressure to extend the cease-fire for as long as possible, if not permanently. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the eight weeks of Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip have resulted in the death of over 13,300 Palestinians and the displacement of thousands more. Israel has expressed openness to halting all attacks if Hamas continues to release more hostages.
