Man charged with murder after estranged wife's body found in Florida storage unit

21:59 02.12.2023

In a shocking development, the estranged husband of Shakeira Yvonne Rucker, whose body was found in a storage unit in Orange County, Florida, has now been charged with her murder, according to authorities. Rucker's family had reported her missing after they last saw her on November 11. At the time, the family speculated that she may have left her home with her estranged husband, Cory Hill. The investigation into her disappearance took a grim turn when her body was discovered in a storage unit registered to Hill.

In a statement released on Friday, the Office of the State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit confirmed that Cory Hill has been formally charged with the murder of Shakeira Rucker. Hill had previously been arrested on November 13 for an unrelated shooting incident, where he was charged with four counts of attempted murder after allegedly shooting at a former girlfriend and her family. This arrest, however, ultimately led to the discovery of Rucker's body.

The storage unit where Rucker's body was found is located at 2400 Wiggins Road in Apopka. Law enforcement officials were alerted to the situation after someone complained about a strong odor emanating from the unit registered to Hill. Upon opening the unit, deputies discovered the lifeless body of Shakeira Rucker, who had been fatally shot.

Authorities have indicated that they will be seeking a first-degree murder indictment in Rucker's homicide. However, due to procedural rules, they are currently limited to filing a second-degree murder charge by information before presenting the case to the Orange County Grand Jury. The State Attorney's Office emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that they are limited in what they can disclose at this time.

Cory Hill, 51, remains in jail under a no bond status. His initial charges of attempted second-degree murder and other related charges are in connection with the shooting incident involving his ex-girlfriend and her family. Hill now faces an additional charge of second-degree murder (with a firearm) for the death of Shakeira Rucker.

It has been revealed that Rucker had recently discovered Hill's extramarital affair with another woman, which led to their estrangement. Court documents allege that Hill killed Rucker on November 12, almost a week before her body was discovered. The arrest warrant affidavit suggests that Hill may have intended to silence Rucker and then attempted to kill the woman he was having an affair with to cover up his actions.

Although Hill is currently represented by the public defender's office, they have not yet provided any comments regarding the case. As the investigation continues, officials are diligently building their case and are considering the possibility of later indicting Hill with first-degree murder. For now, the community is left to grapple with the tragedy and the loss of Shakeira Yvonne Rucker, as they await further updates from law enforcement.
