Former Congressman George Santos to star in HBO film after congressional expulsion

03:41 04.12.2023

Former Republican lawmaker George Santos was expelled from Congress in a historic 311-114 vote, becoming the first House member to be expelled in over 20 years. Santos had been indicted on 23 counts related to wire fraud, identity theft, falsification of records, credit card fraud, and other charges. He was also accused of misusing campaign funds for personal luxury items and treatments, including botox. Despite pleading not guilty, the ethics report was scathing, alleging that Santos had "blatantly stole" campaign funds.

Less than a day after his expulsion, HBO Films, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery, announced that they were developing a movie based on Santos' career. The film, a dark comedy, will be based on Mark Chiusano's book "The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos," which was officially published on Tuesday. The book, described as a forensic and darkly comic look at Santos' political career, chronicles his rise from humble beginnings in Brazil to his fraudulent exploits in the wealthy districts of Long Island.

The movie will be written by Mike Makowsky, known for his work on HBO's "Bad Education," and will be produced by Frank Rich, who has previously worked on acclaimed shows like Veep and "Succession." The announcement of the film came as a surprise to many, but HBO confirmed that the project had been in the works for some time.

While Santos' expulsion led to the announcement of the film, it was not the only significant development following his removal from Congress. New York Governor Kathy Hochul promptly announced a special election to fill Santos' vacancy in the state's 3rd District. According to election attorney Joe Burns, the special election should take place within 70 to 80 days of Hochul's announcement.

Santos, known for his penchant for fabricating stories, had previously given Republicans a victory in the 2022 cycle by flipping New York's 3rd Congressional District red. However, his personal biography was exposed as fraudulent, including false claims about attending Baruch College and having a career on Wall Street. Now facing a 23-count indictment, Santos has vowed to fight back by submitting multiple complaints against his former peers to the House Committee on Ethics.

The upcoming movie about Santos' career has generated significant buzz, with HBO enlisting a talented team of writers and producers to bring the intriguing tale to the silver screen. However, a specific release date and cast have not yet been announced, leaving audiences eagerly awaiting further details.
