BBC Cuts Kelsey Grammer's Interview Short After Trump Support Statement

03:31 06.12.2023

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 4's Today program, Frasier star Kelsey Grammer had his conversation cut short by Paramount+ representatives after expressing his support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The interview, conducted by host Justin Webb, took an unexpected turn when Grammer mentioned Roseanne Barr, a fellow comedian and Trump supporter. Grammer claimed that the idea for the Frasier revival came after the success of the 2018 Roseanne reboot, which was later canceled due to controversial remarks made by Barr, including a racist joke about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

During the interview, Webb asked Grammer about his own support for Trump, to which the actor confirmed that he still supports the former president. However, after the segment concluded, Webb revealed that the Paramount+ PR representatives were unhappy with Grammer's discussion of his political views and decided to end the interview. Webb emphasized that Grammer was willing to continue talking about why he supports Trump and still does so in the upcoming election.

Grammer has been vocal about his political views in the past, publicly stating that he voted for Trump in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. He has also expressed that his support for the former president has not negatively impacted his career. In a 2019 interview with USA Today, Grammer stated, "I'm not aware of taking a hit for (it) but now, certainly passions run high, and certainly he has touched on an extraordinarily passionate response." He further commented that he considers all politicians to be clowns and believes they have not been helpful to anyone but themselves.

The interview with the BBC primarily focused on aspects of Grammer's life beyond politics, such as the revival of the popular sitcom Frasier and his personal experiences, including the tragic murder of his younger sister. Grammer discussed the significance of bringing back the beloved character of Dr. Frasier Crane, stating that he wanted to prove to himself and others that the character was still interesting, watchable, and funny. He believed that there were more stories to tell about the character, mirroring the ongoing stories in people's own lives.

Paramount+ representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the incident during the BBC interview. Despite the interruption, Grammer's portrayal of Dr. Frasier Crane continues to captivate audiences in the new Paramount+ show "Frasier," which premiered in October.
