Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon spearheads green revolution in red state

22:01 10.12.2023

Representatives from nearly every nation gathered in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates for an annual climate summit, sparking dismay among activists who pushed for a complete transition away from fossil fuels. However, amidst the discussions on curbing global temperatures, a surprising voice emerged from the heart of coal country in the United States - Wyoming's Republican Governor, Mark Gordon. With Wyoming being the country's leading coal producer and a conservative stronghold, Governor Gordon's advocacy for climate-friendly energy projects and action to address the climate crisis has raised eyebrows and sparked debate.

Governor Gordon, a native of Wyoming, grew up on a cattle ranch, where he developed a deep appreciation for the environment and witnessed firsthand the effects of a changing climate. As a mountain climber, he has seen glaciers retreat due to global warming. Inspired by these experiences, he has set an ambitious goal for Wyoming to not only achieve carbon neutrality but eventually become carbon negative.

This bold commitment faced some resistance, even within his own party. In September, after reaffirming his net-negative emissions goal at Harvard, Wyoming's Republican party passed a vote of "no confidence" in him. Nevertheless, Governor Gordon remains undeterred and continues to champion an "all of the above" energy policy, emphasizing the importance of embracing innovation to achieve a sustainable future.

Wyoming boasts abundant natural resources, including vast wind resources, significant coal reserves, and substantial reserves of uranium, oil, and natural gas. The state already has massive wind farms scattered across its landscape, and plans are underway to build the largest wind farm in the continental United States. This project, backed by billionaire Philip Anschutz, will generate approximately 12 million megawatt-hours of power per year, enough to supply over a million homes. Furthermore, Wyoming is on track to export nuclear power from a next-generation reactor, with a $500 million investment from Bill Gates.

While Wyoming still heavily relies on coal, there is a growing focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to mitigate its environmental impact. The University of Wyoming's School of Energy Resources is leading the way in developing CCS projects, aiming to capture CO2 emissions from fossil fuel sources before they reach the atmosphere. These projects demonstrate the feasibility of CCS, but the economic viability remains a challenge. It is a costly endeavor, and the decision to invest in carbon capture must be weighed against the alternative of doing nothing.

Governor Gordon acknowledges the skepticism surrounding carbon capture and storage but affirms that Wyoming is committed to exploring all possible avenues to tackle the climate crisis. His administration has taken steps to streamline permitting processes, recognizing the importance of reducing regulatory barriers to expedite energy projects.

The governor's inclusive approach to energy development has attracted innovators to Wyoming. Crusoe Energy Systems, for instance, has set up modular data centers on oil fields, utilizing the waste gas from flaring to generate electricity. By repurposing this wasted gas, Crusoe Energy Systems has prevented significant carbon emissions, equivalent to taking several hundred thousand cars off the road annually.

Through these efforts, Governor Gordon aims to send a message to the rest of the country and the world that embracing both red and green policies is possible and necessary to address the urgent climate crisis. However, critics argue that the reliance on fossil fuels, even with carbon capture technology, may hinder the transition to a fully sustainable future.

As the climate summit concludes in the United Arab Emirates, the discussions and actions taken by representatives from around the world highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the balance between fossil fuels and renewable energy. The example of Wyoming and Governor Mark Gordon's push for climate-friendly projects underscores the complex and multifaceted nature of addressing climate change in a state heavily dependent on traditional energy sources. Ultimately, the path forward will require a delicate balance between economic considerations, environmental concerns, and technological advancements.
