Pennsylvania Leaders Unite to Denounce Antisemitism at Rally

22:07 10.12.2023

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Sen. Bob Casey joined community leaders at Congregation Rodeph Shalom Synagogue in Philadelphia on Sunday to denounce antisemitism. The rally was organized in response to recent incidents of antisemitism in Philadelphia and globally. Shapiro praised those who are speaking up against hate in all its forms, including antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, and homophobia. The gathering took place just one day after University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill resigned amid criticism for her testimony at a congressional hearing. Magill faced intense scrutiny after she was unable to condemn calls for the genocide of Jews on campus. Scott Bok, the Chair of the Board of Trustees at UPenn, also resigned following Magill's resignation. Penn named Julie Platt as the interim chair of the Board and announced plans to find a permanent chair before the start of the spring term. During the rally, Eitan Linhart, a sophomore at Penn, shared his experience with the rise of antisemitism on campus. He cited incidents such as a Jewish fraternity being defaced with graffiti that read "The Jews are Nazis" and friends who no longer feel safe wearing yarmulkes on campus. Linhart expressed his surprise at the indifference towards such hatred. Shapiro and other officials condemned antisemitism and expressed their support for the Jewish community in Pennsylvania. They commended the efforts of Pennsylvanians who have taken actions, both big and small, to combat antisemitism. Shapiro emphasized the importance of holding leaders accountable and called Magill's responses at the congressional hearing "unacceptable." The rally aimed to call out and condemn the evil of antisemitism. Magill's resignation came after pressure from donors, politicians, and alumni who criticized her handling of the issue. Her resignation marked the first university president to step down in connection with the recent uproar on campuses regarding antisemitism.
