Texas Prosecutors Drop Murder Charges Against 2 in Fatal Stabbing

10:42 12.12.2023

In a shocking turn of events, Texas prosecutors have dropped murder charges against two individuals in connection with the 2020 killing of 23-year-old Seattle woman Marisela Botello-Valadez. This decision comes as the trial of the third defendant, Lisa Dykes, continues. The case gained international attention last year when two of the accused individuals cut off their ankle monitors and fled the country while out on bond.

The dismissal of charges against Nina Marano and Charles Anthony Beltran comes at a time when the use of technology in pretrial release has come under scrutiny. Just days ago, a Texas man who had cut off his ankle monitor went on a shooting rampage, bringing renewed attention to the effectiveness and reliability of such monitoring devices.

The trial of Lisa Dykes, the remaining defendant, began last week and carried on into Monday. However, newly revealed court records indicate that the prosecutors' motions to dismiss the murder charges against Marano and Beltran were approved by a judge on Friday, citing the "interest of justice" as the reason for the dismissal.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office spokesperson did not respond to inquiries about the decision to drop the murder charges. Nevertheless, Marano and Beltran still face charges of tampering with evidence related to Botello-Valadez's death. The victim's remains were discovered in the woods months after she was reported missing in Dallas.

Attempts to reach the lawyers representing Marano, Beltran, and Dykes for comment have been unsuccessful. However, an attorney representing Marano and Dykes stated to The Dallas Morning News that he had anticipated the dismissals due to inconsistencies in Beltran's account of events. Beltran, who testified on Friday, admitted to living with Marano and Dykes. He claimed to have met Botello-Valadez at a nightclub and proceeded to have consensual sexual relations with her at his residence. Beltran alleged that he awoke to screams and witnessed Dykes stabbing Botello-Valadez. However, under cross-examination by Dykes' lawyer, Beltran acknowledged initially lying to investigators about the incident.

The three defendants were arrested six months after Botello-Valadez's disappearance in October 2020. Marano and Dykes were subsequently released on $500,000 bonds. However, both women removed their GPS trackers last Christmas and fled the country, as documented in court records. They were eventually apprehended in Cambodia with the assistance of local authorities and the FBI.

This development follows another tragic killing in Dallas last year, which prompted Texas lawmakers to enact a law making it a felony to remove an ankle monitor. The legislation came into effect in September, shortly after authorities in San Antonio received a call regarding a man experiencing a mental health crisis after cutting off his ankle monitor. Shane James Jr., the individual in question, was not arrested by sheriff's deputies during the encounter. He now faces charges of capital murder for a series of shootings that resulted in the deaths of six individuals in Austin and San Antonio this month.
