Dodgers Acquire Tyler Glasnow in Busy Offseason

22:39 14.12.2023

In a stunning move, the Los Angeles Dodgers made yet another splash in the MLB offseason, just hours after introducing Shohei Ohtani as their newest member. The Dodgers have acquired right-hander Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Manuel Margot from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-hander Ryan Pepiot and outfielder Jonny Deluca, according to multiple reports.

The deal, which is contingent on Glasnow signing an extension with the Dodgers, showcases Los Angeles' commitment to building a strong roster and contending for a World Series title in the upcoming season. The addition of Ohtani was just the beginning, as the Dodgers have been rumored to be pursuing a number of potential additions to bolster their lineup.

Glasnow, who is considered one of the biggest prizes on the trade market, brings an impressive track record to the Dodgers. Despite dealing with injuries throughout his career, including a Tommy John Surgery in 2021, the 30-year-old starter had a dominant season in 2022. He went 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA and recorded 162 strikeouts in a career-high 120 innings pitched.

The importance of Ohtani's willingness to defer the majority of his $700 million contract to the end of his deal cannot be overstated. The Dodgers were able to use the savings from Ohtani's contract to make a move for Glasnow, who is due $25 million this season. According to ESPN, Glasnow's contract extension could exceed nine figures, further displaying the Dodgers' financial commitment to building a championship team.

In addition to Glasnow, the Dodgers also acquired outfielder Manuel Margot. The 29-year-old is highly regarded for his defensive skills and will join an outfield that already includes James Outman, Chris Taylor, and Jason Heyward. Margot, who is set to earn $10 million next season, adds depth and versatility to the Dodgers' lineup.

The potential trade between the Dodgers and the Rays has been the subject of active discussions between the two teams. The deal would send Glasnow and Margot to Los Angeles in exchange for pitcher Ryan Pepiot and outfield prospect Jonny Deluca. Pepiot, 26, has shown promise in his two seasons with the Dodgers, making 17 appearances, including 10 starts. Deluca, 25, displayed his potential by hitting .262 with two home runs in limited at-bats last season.

The Dodgers' pursuit of Glasnow and Margot is a clear indication that they are not content with just one superstar acquisition. The team's willingness to make bold moves and pursue big-name targets, such as Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamato and former Brewers and Padres closer Josh Hader, further solidifies their position as World Series favorites.

The success of the potential deal is contingent upon Glasnow agreeing to an extension with the Dodgers. The team opened a window for negotiations on Thursday morning, and they are hopeful that the deal can be finalized by Friday. If the trade goes through, Glasnow would become a free agent after the 2024 season.

Glasnow's career has been marred by injuries, including a Tommy John Surgery in 2021 and a back injury last season. However, the Dodgers recognize his immense talent and are willing to take a chance on him, banking on his ace-like qualities to strengthen their rotation.

The acquisition of Glasnow and Margot is yet another testament to the Dodgers' aggressive approach in the offseason. With Ohtani deferring the majority of his contract, the Dodgers have the flexibility to continue making moves and pursuing star players. The team's willingness to invest in building a championship-caliber roster is evident, and their rivals should take notice. The Dodgers are not done yet and could still make additional moves to further bolster their lineup and pitching staff.
