In a startling discovery, security officers at New York's LaGuardia Airport found 17 bullets concealed inside a disposable baby diaper in a passenger's carry-on bag. The incident took place when the bag triggered an alarm in an X-ray machine during a routine security check. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) confirmed that the passenger, a man from Arkansas who was bound for Chicago's Midway Airport, initially claimed to have no knowledge of the bullet-filled diaper. However, he later suggested that his girlfriend may have put it there.
The TSA, which prohibits the possession of ammunition in carry-on baggage, issued a citation for unlawful possession of the 9mm ammunition to the passenger. The Port Authority police were also involved in the incident and are handling the case. The TSA humorously remarked, "Apparently this guy needs a bullet-proof plan for packing his carry-on bag before heading to the airport for his next flight."
This is not the first time LaGuardia Airport has made bizarre discoveries during security checks. Just last month, officers found a .45-caliber pistol and a magazine loaded with six bullets inside a pair of Nike sneakers in a checked bag. In January, airport security officers at John F Kennedy International Airport arrested a man after finding a handgun dismantled and packed inside two jars of peanut butter in his carry-on bag. Additionally, in April of this year, authorities at Honolulu International Airport discovered a loaded .22-caliber pistol and two boxes of ammunition, totaling over 100 bullets, in a carry-on bag. The passenger explained that he had visited a shooting range and had inadvertently forgotten to remove the firearm and ammunition before heading to the airport.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of passengers attempting to transport firearms and ammunition through airport security. While firearms are allowed to be transported as checked luggage, they must be placed in a locked, hard-sided container. However, many passengers continue to disregard these regulations, resulting in potentially dangerous situations. The TSA remains vigilant in its efforts to ensure the safety of air travel by consistently enforcing these rules and conducting thorough security checks.
