NH Man Accused of Threatening Multiple Presidential Candidates with Death

20:52 21.12.2023

A New Hampshire man, Tyler Anderson, who was previously released from jail after being accused of sending threatening text messages to a presidential candidate, now faces additional charges of threatening the lives of different candidates. Anderson, 30, of Dover, was indicted by a federal grand jury on three counts of sending threats using interstate commerce. His arraignment is scheduled for January 5. There is no comment from his lawyer at this time.

Anderson was initially arrested on December 9, but was released on December 14 under certain conditions set forth by a federal judge. These conditions include avoiding contact with any presidential candidate or their campaigns, taking prescribed medications for mental health treatment, and removing guns from his home that belong to a roommate.

The U.S. Attorney's office did not disclose the names of the candidates targeted by Anderson's threats. However, when he was arrested, a spokesperson for Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy confirmed that the texts were directed at their campaign. According to court documents, Anderson received a text message from the campaign notifying him of a breakfast event in Portsmouth. The campaign staff received two threatening text messages in response, one threatening to shoot the candidate in the head and the other threatening to kill everyone at the event and desecrate their corpses.

During an interview with the FBI, Anderson admitted to sending similar texts to "multiple other campaigns." The latest charges indicate that Anderson sent similar threats to two different candidates before the Ramaswamy messages, on November 22 and December 6. The November 22 campaign received texts threatening to impale and disembowel the candidate. On December 6, texts were sent to another campaign threatening to shoot the candidate in the head and carry out a mass shooting.

One of the texts provided as evidence in court documents was from December 6 and threatened a mass shooting in response to an invitation to see a candidate who "isn't afraid to tell it like it is." This slogan is associated with Republican Chris Christie's campaign, known as "Tell it Like It Is Town Halls." A spokesperson for the Christie campaign thanked law enforcement officials for addressing the threats made against them.

Each charge against Anderson carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Anderson is due back in court early next month, just before New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary on January 23. Attorney General Merrick Garland has stated that threats of violence against public officials or those seeking public office will not be tolerated, as they undermine the function of democracy.
