"The Iron Claw" Review: Zac Efron's Punishing Wrestling Movie

06:03 23.12.2023

In the world of professional wrestling, few stories are as tragic and tumultuous as that of the Von Erich wrestling family. Director Sean Durkin's film "The Iron Claw" delves deep into the true and heartbreaking circumstances that befell the famous family during the 1980s and '90s. Clocking in at 130 minutes and rated R for language, suicide, some sexuality, and drug use, this film is not for the faint of heart.

The movie centers around the four Von Erich brothers, played by an unlikely ensemble of actors. Zac Efron takes on the role of Kevin, the most enthusiastic fighter of the pack, desperately seeking approval from his hard-nosed father and manager Fritz, portrayed by Holt McCallany. Other performers, such as Harris Dickinson, Jeremy Allen White, and Stanley Simons, also find their place in the ring and bring their own unique talents to the screen.

At first, the brothers share a sweet bond, but their competitive nature and their father's relentless pressure drive them apart. The macho pressure to be the NWA world heavyweight champion takes a toll on each brother, ultimately leading to horrific consequences. The film explores the concept of the "Von Erich Curse," although it becomes painfully clear that the true cause of the family's trauma lies in their toxic family dynamics.

Parallel to the Von Erichs' story is the rise of character-driven wrestling around the world, thanks in part to the family and other wild characters such as Ric Flair. While the Von Erichs enjoy popularity and adoration from fans, they are privately tortured by their own demons. Kevin eventually finds solace and support from his wife Pam, played by Lily James, but by then, the audience is already battered and bruised, unable to stand up.

The emotional weight of "The Iron Claw" is evident from the beginning, as the most gripping scenes unfold not in the wrestling ring, but within the family circle. Director Sean Durkin establishes an edgy, off-kilter tone, blending tragedy with comedy to create a unique melodrama. The film delves into the family's rise in pro wrestling, starting in the 1970s with Jack Barton Adkisson, also known as Fritz Von Erich.

As the story progresses, Durkin navigates the complexities of the Von Erich family dynamics, shining a spotlight on the brothers' relationships with one another and their father. The warmth and intimacy between the brothers are both heartwarming and heartbreaking, serving as a stark contrast to the dark underbelly of their lives.

While the film thrives in the lighter moments and the exhilarating scenes in the wrestling ring, it falters when tackling the darker themes of abuse and emotional repression. Durkin's exploration of the abusive father figure lacks conviction, and the film's focus narrows on one brother's transformation from true believer to heroic skeptic. This narrow focus detracts from the story's potential for a more nuanced exploration of the family's struggles.

Overall, "The Iron Claw" is a harrowing and emotionally charged film that sheds light on the tragic history of the Von Erich wrestling family. Despite its flaws, the performances and the captivating storytelling make it a compelling watch for fans of wrestling and those interested in exploring the complexities of family dynamics.
