6-year-old put on wrong Spirit Airlines flight during holiday rush: Grandparents outraged

17:15 24.12.2023

In a major travel mishap during the holiday season rush, Spirit Airlines mistakenly put an unaccompanied 6-year-old child on the wrong flight, causing panic and distress for the child's family. The incident occurred on Thursday when the child was supposed to travel from Philadelphia International Airport to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers but was instead boarded onto a flight to Orlando, a city located about 160 miles away.

Spirit Airlines, in a statement, acknowledged the mistake and apologized to the family. They stated that an internal investigation was underway to determine how the error occurred. The airline reassured that the child was under the care and supervision of a Spirit team member throughout the journey. As soon as the mistake was discovered, immediate steps were taken to communicate with the family and reconnect them. However, the airline did not provide any additional details about the child or the specific circumstances surrounding the incident.

The child's grandmother, Maria Ramos, expressed her shock and confusion when she arrived at the Fort Myers airport and was informed that her grandson was not on the flight. Ramos had handed over the child to a flight attendant in Philadelphia and had the check-in tag as proof. Frantically, she approached the flight attendant on the plane to inquire about her grandson's whereabouts, only to be told that no children were with her. It was then that Ramos received a call from her grandson, who informed her that he had landed in Orlando, several hours away from their intended destination.

While the child ended up in Orlando, his luggage successfully made it to Fort Myers. Ramos demanded answers from Spirit Airlines, questioning how her grandson ended up on the wrong plane. She raised concerns about whether the flight attendant allowed the child to navigate the journey alone or if there was a miscommunication that led to the mix-up. Ramos insisted on receiving a direct explanation from the airline.

Unfortunately, incidents of unaccompanied minors being placed on incorrect flights have occurred in the past. In 2019, a boy was sent on a United Airlines flight to Germany instead of Sweden, while in 2009, two young girls were boarded onto wrong Continental Express flights. These incidents were attributed to miscommunication among staff.

The mishap involving the unaccompanied minor adds to the list of misdirected passengers in aviation incidents. In 2018, United Airlines mistakenly flew a German shepherd bound for Kansas to Japan, and in the same year, a flight from Newark to St. Louis had to be diverted after it was discovered that a dog meant for Akron, Ohio had been loaded onto the plane.

Spirit Airlines' mistake has raised concerns about the safety and responsibility of transporting unaccompanied minors. As the holiday travel rush reached its peak on December 21, 2023, with nearly 50,000 flights taking off across the US, incidents like these highlight the need for enhanced measures and protocols to prevent such errors in the future. Spirit Airlines has offered to reimburse Ramos for the four-hour drive she had to undertake to pick up her grandson in Orlando, but she insists on receiving a thorough explanation for the distressing incident.
