Michigan State's Jeremy Fears Jr. survives holiday break shooting, released from hospital

02:47 25.12.2023

Michigan State basketball player Jeremy Fears Jr. has been released from the hospital after suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in his leg while at home in Illinois over the holiday break. Fears' father, Jeremy Fears, shared the news on social media, stating that his son was doing well and heading home. He also posted three videos of Fears Jr. walking, sitting, and using crutches in the hospital.

The university announced that Fears underwent successful surgery following the shooting. Local police, although not identifying Fears by name, released a statement regarding the incident. According to ESPN, an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were at a home in Joliet, Illinois with friends when a male gunman entered and began shooting. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, and no suspect has been identified.

Fears seemed to remain positive despite the setback, posting a picture on his Instagram story with the caption, "Minor setback we gone be good appreciate yall." In his first 12 games for the Spartans, Fears has been averaging 3.5 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds in 15.3 minutes per game.

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo released a statement, expressing his support for Fears on his road to recovery. "Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably," Izzo said. "While there is much we still don't know, my focus is on supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery."

According to 1340 AM, Fears was one of two people shot in the Marycrest subdivision of Joliet at 4 a.m. on Saturday. The nature of Fears' surgery has not been disclosed. The Joliet Police Department was not available for comment due to the holiday.

This incident comes after Michigan State previously experienced a mass shooting on campus in February, which resulted in the death of three students and five others injured. The university community continues to face the impacts of these tragic events.
