Israeli airstrike kills top Iranian commander, Tehran warns of retaliation

04:41 26.12.2023

In a recent development that has escalated tensions between Iran and Israel, an Israeli airstrike outside Damascus in Syria on Monday resulted in the death of a top Iranian commander. Sayyed Razi Mousavi, a senior adviser in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in the attack. According to Reuters, three security sources have confirmed the death of Mousavi, who played a crucial role in coordinating the military alliance between Iran and Syria.

The news of Mousavi's death was announced on Iran's state television, which interrupted its programming to report on the incident. The announcement described Mousavi as one of the oldest advisers for the IRGC in Syria and stated that he had accompanied Qassem Soleimani, the head of the IRGC's elite Quds Force, who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in Iraq in 2020.

Hossein Akbari, Iran's ambassador in Damascus, revealed that Mousavi was in the Iranian embassy as a diplomat when the attack occurred. He added that Mousavi had been killed by missiles fired by Israel after returning home from work. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi condemned the assassination and characterized it as a display of Israel's weakness. Raisi was quoted as saying, "This act is a sign of the Zionist regime's frustration and weakness in the region for which it will certainly pay the price."

Echoing President Raisi's sentiments, the IRGC issued a statement through state TV, asserting that Israel would face consequences for killing the Iranian adviser. The statement read, "The usurper and savage Zionist regime will pay for this crime." Nasser Kanaani, a spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, further emphasized that Iran reserves the right to respond to the action at the appropriate time and place.

Israel's military did not provide immediate comments regarding Mousavi's death. However, it is worth noting that attacks on Iran-linked targets in Syria by Israel are not uncommon and have been occurring for years. Iran's influence in Syria has continued to grow since it backed President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that began in 2011.

The incident marks a significant escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel, which have been simmering already due to Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Iran has long been accused of supporting Palestinian terror organizations, including Hamas, as well as other US-designated terrorist groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

There are concerns that the ongoing conflict in Israel could potentially trigger a broader regional war. Mousavi's death has further heightened these concerns, as he was considered a key figure in Iran's operations in Syria. Sources have revealed that Mousavi had previously been targeted in Israeli assassination attempts.

Despite Israel's usual silence on attacks against Iranian targets in Syria, the Israeli Defense Force is reportedly preparing for potential retaliation from Iran. The situation remains tense, with both countries indicating a readiness to respond to any further escalations.
