Mother arrested in connection to son's body found in suitcase

23:12 18.03.2024

A mother who had been wanted by Indiana police since her 5-year-old son's body was found inside a suitcase in 2022 was finally arrested in Los Angeles last week. Dejaune Ludie Anderson, 38, is accused of killing her son, Cairo Ammar Jordan, whose remains were discovered in a hard-shell suitcase in rural Washington County, Indiana. An arrest warrant was issued for Anderson in October 2022 for charges of murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, and obstruction of justice. The mother managed to evade arrest for over a year until a concerned citizen's tip led authorities to her location in Arcadia, California, as she was attempting to board a train on March 14.

Anderson is currently being held without bail in Los Angeles County jail. The suitcase containing Cairo's body had a distinctive Las Vegas design on it and was found by a man foraging for mushrooms in a wooded area. An autopsy revealed that Cairo died from an electrolyte imbalance, likely caused by viral gastroenteritis. Another woman, Dawn Elaine Coleman, was arrested in connection with Cairo's death and sentenced to 30 years in prison, with five years suspended to probation.

Cairo's body was discovered by a mushroom hunter in Washington County, Indiana, and it took months to identify him as he had never been reported missing. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation helped authorities contact Cairo's father to confirm the boy's identity. Coleman and Anderson had known each other for about a year and had traveled extensively together with Cairo. Coleman admitted to assisting Anderson in disposing of Cairo's body in the suitcase in a wooded area.

Anderson's arrest brings some closure to the tragic case that has haunted the community for years. Police are not seeking anyone else in connection with Cairo's death, and they are working to bring Anderson back to Indiana to face charges. The community has continued to honor Cairo's memory with flowers placed at his gravesite and prayers for him and his family.
