Suspect arrested for reckless Taco Bell drive-thru rampage

05:15 26.12.2023

In a shocking incident that unfolded at a Taco Bell drive-thru in Prince George's County, Maryland, a suspect was arrested after violently colliding with several police cruisers. The man, who remains unidentified, was apprehended on Friday, as captured in a video obtained by FOX 5 DC. The incident, which took place at the fast food restaurant on Branch Avenue in Marlow Heights, left several police vehicles damaged, with one even being rendered completely totaled.

According to Lt. Moses Edwards of the Marlow Heights Special Police, the suspect was operating a stolen 2011 Hyundai Tiburon. In the video footage, the suspect can be seen exhibiting a reckless disregard for the safety of others, as he refuses to comply with the officers' orders to relinquish control of the vehicle. "He kept his foot on the accelerator," Lieutenant Edwards revealed. "We were telling him: take your foot off the accelerator, put the car in park, turn the car off. He wouldn't. You could hear him revving up the motor, revving up the engine, and during that time, [an officer] was still pinned in his vehicle."

Despite the chaos that ensued, it was fortunate that there were no severe injuries reported. However, one officer did sustain injuries and was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. Thankfully, the officer was later released, indicating that the injuries were not life-threatening.

Adding another layer of concern to this already distressing situation, a woman was found in the passenger seat of the stolen vehicle. She quickly distanced herself from the suspect's actions and cooperated with the authorities by raising her hands and stating, "I'm not part of this," according to Lieutenant Edwards. It was later revealed that during the suspect's reckless rampage, he also collided with a blue sedan containing a father and his six-year-old child. Fortunately, the occupants of the sedan were believed to be unharmed.

The stolen car, a painful reminder of the alarming rise in car thefts, belonged to a resident of Southeast DC. The owner, whose identity remains undisclosed, spoke to FOX 5 about the shocking incident. She expressed her disbelief and frustration, stating, "When I got up yesterday morning and came outside to my car, there was no car." Shockingly, this was not the first time she had fallen victim to car theft. Furthermore, she revealed that the thief managed to start the vehicle without her keys.

Expressing her distress, the car's owner remarked, "It's unfortunate, but I kind of feel like people need to get jobs and work for whatever they get instead of taking whatever they can that's materialistic, and it's unfortunate the woman didn't realize she was in a stolen car." Her sentiments highlight the growing frustration within the community regarding car thefts and the need for stricter consequences for such crimes.

Marlow Heights Police Chief John Conklin, speaking with FOX 5, shed light on the suspect's criminal history. According to Chief Conklin, the individual had prior arrests, one of which was related to carjacking. Chief Conklin's statement emphasizes the urgent need for the state's attorney and judges to effectively prosecute and punish individuals involved in such crimes. He firmly believes that without appropriate consequences, the escalating trend of car thefts will continue unabated.

The incident left a lasting impact on the Marlow Heights Police Department, with four of their eight cruisers sustaining damage. As a result, the department now faces the task of repairing or replacing these crucial vehicles. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the subsequent strain it places on the resources of local police departments.

As the investigation continues, the residents of Prince George's County and surrounding areas anxiously await justice for the suspect's reckless actions. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the need for increased vigilance and security measures to combat the rising tide of car thefts plaguing the community.
