Search for man overboard on Baltimore cruise ship suspended by Coast Guard

18:23 26.12.2023

The U.S. Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend its search for a 41-year-old man who tragically went overboard on the "Vision of the Seas" cruise ship just before Christmas. The incident occurred on Saturday night when the ship was approximately 127 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina. The Coast Guard, in a statement posted on X, revealed that crew members promptly reported the incident to local authorities, who then initiated a search and rescue mission.

The Coast Guard teams tirelessly combed through an extensive area, covering over 1,625 square miles over the course of eight grueling hours. Despite their determined efforts, the missing man was not found. The Coast Guard in Charleston released a final update, stating, "Out of privacy for the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share." The search may have come to a halt, but the pain and uncertainty for the family and friends of the missing man continue.

Passengers onboard the "Vision of the Seas" were abruptly alerted to the distressing situation just after 7 p.m. on Saturday. An announcement blared over the ship's loudspeakers, saying, "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar, Starboard." This unexpected message left everyone bewildered and concerned. Colin Schappi, a passenger who was enjoying dinner at the time, recounted the confusion, stating, "All the staff made a face at each other. No one knew what was going on at first, then they did another announcement explaining what happened a few minutes later."

The cruise, which commenced in Baltimore on Friday and had its first stop in Orlando on Sunday, was part of an eight-day roundtrip itinerary with the theme of "Christmas." The ship had plans for two more stops in the Bahamas before returning to Maryland. It was supposed to be a joyous holiday getaway, but the tragic incident has cast a somber shadow over the entire voyage.

This unfortunate event is not the first of its kind in recent months. Last month, a 28-year-old man jumped off a Carnival cruise ship bound for Jamaica, and despite an extensive search effort covering over 5,600 miles, he was never found. These incidents serve as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers that can accompany the allure of a cruise vacation.

As the Coast Guard's search for the missing man has come to an end, the thoughts and prayers of many are with his family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with new information to contact the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston at 843-740-7050.
