Former U.S. Senator and Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl passed away at the age of 88 after a brief illness, as announced by Herb Kohl Philanthropies. Kohl was known for putting people first throughout his life, from his employees and their families to his customers and various charitable organizations. JoAnne Anton, the director of giving at Herb Kohl Philanthropies, emphasized that Kohl's legacy was one of humility, commitment, compromise, and kindness. The values he embodied will continue to live on through his foundation.

Kohl's upbringing in Milwaukee was shaped by his parents, who were Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants. He often spoke about their journey, stating that they arrived with nothing and instilled in him the belief that success required a full effort in life. His father, Maxwell Kohl, founded Kohl's Food Stores in 1946, which eventually expanded into the first Kohl's department store in 1962. Herb became the president of the company in 1970, overseeing its growth and expansion. In 1972, Kohl's was sold to British American Tobacco, and Herb remained in management until 1979.

Kohl's political career began in 1989 when he was elected as a Democratic U.S. senator. He served four elected terms before stepping aside in 2013. Throughout his time in office, Kohl used his personal fortune to fund his Senate races, allowing him to present himself as a senator for the people. He was particularly effective on issues important to Wisconsin, such as dairy policy. Despite his wealth, Kohl was known for his humility and lack of ego, making him a unique figure in the Senate.

In addition to his political career, Kohl was also the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team. He purchased the team in 1985 for $18 million, ensuring that it would remain in Milwaukee. Kohl's dedication to keeping the team in the city was unwavering, even turning down an offer from NBA legend Michael Jordan. He went on to sell the franchise in 2014 for $550 million to New York financiers Wes Edens and Marc Lasry, with James Dinan joining as a co-owner later on. Kohl's commitment to the team extended beyond ownership, as he donated $100 million for the construction of the Fiserv Forum, the Bucks' new arena.

Kohl's philanthropy extended beyond sports. In the 1990s, he donated $25 million for the construction of the Kohl Center, which serves as the home for the University of Wisconsin-Madison's basketball and hockey teams. His generosity and friendliness made a lasting impact on the community, and he will be remembered for his contributions to both sports and civic causes.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson emphasized Kohl's humility and generosity, stating that he was always approachable and down-to-earth. Johnson also highlighted Kohl's instrumental role in saving the Bucks team for Milwaukee, ensuring that the city's die-hard sports fans would continue to have a team to support.

Herb Kohl's passing marks the end of an era for Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Bucks. His legacy as a dedicated public servant, successful businessman, and philanthropist will be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
