Chris Harrison condemns 'The Bachelor' for 'toxic' and 'horrifying' departure

12:04 29.12.2023

Former Bachelor host Chris Harrison recently opened up about his departure from the popular dating show, describing it as a toxic and horrifying situation. Speaking on the Trading Secrets podcast, Harrison, 52, reflected on his time on the show, calling it a blessing but acknowledging the difficulties he faced. He revealed that leaving the show was a difficult decision but ultimately the right one for his well-being.

Harrison's departure came after he faced backlash for defending Bachelor winner Rachael Kirkconnell, who had attended an antebellum-themed party during her college years. In an interview with Rachel Lindsay, the franchise's first Black bachelorette, Harrison's comments sparked controversy and led to calls for his removal from the show. Reflecting on the situation, Harrison expressed regret for what he went through and stated that he wouldn't wish it on anyone, even his worst enemy.

After being the face of the Bachelor franchise for nearly two decades, Harrison permanently stepped away from his role as host in June 2021. He admitted that he could have possibly worked through the situation, but ultimately chose to prioritize his well-being and remove himself from the toxic environment. Jesse Palmer was announced as his replacement in September of the same year.

Despite the challenges he faced, Harrison still considers his time on the show a blessing, noting that it changed his life in many ways, including financially and for his children. However, he also mentioned that it was a relationship he no longer needed to be in, as it wasn't healthy for him. Harrison emphasized that the entertainment industry can be difficult, and his departure from The Bachelor franchise deeply impacted his health, causing him to lose weight and experience sleepless nights due to worry about his family.

In his podcast episode titled "It's Time We Talk," Harrison explained that he needed time to process the controversy and figure out the best way to respond. He expressed the importance of allowing people time to think and learn before engaging in discussions. While he acknowledges that he could have handled the situation better, he stands by his decision to step away and take the time he needed.

Looking ahead, Harrison stated that he has no intentions of returning to reality dating shows and believes the franchise has declined since his departure. He mentioned that other shows are now receiving the attention and press that The Bachelor used to enjoy. Despite this, Harrison remains grateful for the opportunity he had and holds the memories dear.

In his personal life, Harrison found love off-screen and married Entertainment Tonight host Lauren Zima in November. Their wedding was attended by several Bachelor alumni, including Wells Adams, Ben Higgins, Arie Luyendyk Jr., Sean and Catherine Lowe, JoJo Fletcher, Trista Sutter, and Colton Underwood.

The Bachelor franchise has not yet commented on Harrison's remarks.
