Tragic Connecticut house fire claims lives of four children

21:36 03.01.2024

Four children tragically lost their lives in a devastating house fire that occurred on Tuesday night in Somers, Connecticut. The fire tore through a duplex home in the town, located just southeast of Springfield, Massachusetts, around 10:20 p.m. Local officials have confirmed the deaths, but the victims have not yet been identified. However, Somers First Selectman Tim Keeney revealed that the children were aged 5, 6, 8, and 12 years old and from the same family. This heartbreaking incident has left the town in mourning, with Keeney describing it as a "tremendous loss."

The firefighters faced significant challenges when attempting to enter the two-family home due to numerous objects obstructing the doorways, according to Keeney. Somers Fire Chief John Roache reported that upon entering the home, responders quickly discovered two children. Unfortunately, one child died at the scene, and another passed away at Johnson Memorial Hospital. The remaining two children were found deceased inside the house shortly after. Roache praised the efforts of the firefighters, stating that they did an extraordinary job trying to rescue the victims.

The left side of the home was occupied by eight people, including one adult, at the time of the fire. Seven individuals, including two children, were present in the residence when the fire broke out. Fortunately, one adult and two children managed to escape unharmed. However, one of the survivors sustained serious burns, while the others suffered minor injuries. The adult survivor has not been identified. Additionally, one firefighter was injured during the incident, as confirmed by state police.

Firefighters successfully rescued several individuals, with one person even jumping from the second floor to escape the flames. Sadly, a litter of puppies perished in the fire, but three dogs were saved. The house has been declared a total loss by Fire Chief Roache. Although smoke alarms were present and appeared to be functioning correctly, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The state fire marshal's office and state police are leading the investigation, and no criminal activity is suspected.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death for the four children. The devastating news has deeply affected the Somers community, and the Somers Public Schools district has mobilized counseling resources for students and staff. Superintendent Sam Galloway expressed condolences and emphasized the importance of supporting those most affected by the tragedy. The Town of Somers has established the Angel Fund to provide immediate and future assistance to the grieving family, and donations are being accepted.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for communities to come together in times of tragedy. The Somers community is united in grief and will continue to support one another during the healing process.
