5 things to know for Jan. 3: Tokyo plane crash, Presidential race, Israel, Harvard, Border crisis

In a year filled with ambitious plans, NASA is setting its sights on a mission that will take astronauts deeper into the solar system than anyone has ventured in over half a century. The space agency's grand visions for the year ahead were unveiled, highlighting their determination to push the boundaries of space exploration.

However, amidst the excitement of NASA's plans, there are pressing issues on Earth that demand attention. The Biden administration has taken legal action against Texas over its controversial immigration law, which grants local law enforcement the authority to arrest migrants. The administration argues that Texas cannot run its own immigration system, sparking a heated battle between President Joe Biden and Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott. This lawsuit follows another legal action taken against Texas earlier in the week, as the two leaders clash over the handling of the US-Mexico border. Abbott recently signed a law that empowers judges to issue orders for the removal of individuals from the country, a move that has drawn criticism from the White House, who deems it "incredibly extreme." In a further escalation, House Republicans have announced their intention to proceed with impeachment proceedings against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, citing his handling of the border crisis.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court finds itself under mounting pressure to address the question of whether former President Donald Trump can be disqualified from holding public office due to his role in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot. Trump has formally petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn a Colorado state ruling that removed him from the state's 2024 ballot under the 14th Amendment's "insurrectionist clause." If the justices decide to take up the case and rule that Trump is ineligible for public office, any votes cast for him would be invalidated. Last week, Maine also removed Trump from its 2024 primary ballot, prompting his legal team to appeal the decision.

In a separate development, hundreds of pages of documents from a lawsuit connected to accused sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein were unsealed on Wednesday. This marks the first batch of documents to be released following a court order in December, with more expected to come in the following weeks. These documents are anticipated to contain the names of nearly 200 individuals, including Epstein's accusers, prominent businesspeople, politicians, and others. Among the names mentioned in the deposition transcripts are Prince Andrew and former President Bill Clinton, both of whom have been linked to Epstein in previous reports. A spokesperson for Clinton has stated that while the former president had flown on Epstein's private plane, he was unaware of the financier's "terrible crimes." It is worth noting that Epstein was found dead in his New York jail cell shortly after new details about sexual assault claims against him were unsealed by the court.

As NASA sets its sights on new frontiers and legal battles unfold on multiple fronts, the year ahead promises to be one filled with both exploration and controversy.
