Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Murdering Mom the Only Escape from Abuse

11:53 05.01.2024

In a groundbreaking interview, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, now 32 years old, has spoken out for the first time since her release from prison, shedding light on the harrowing abuse she endured at the hands of her mother, Clauddine Dee Dee Blanchard. Convicted of second-degree murder in 2015, Gypsy Rose served eight years in prison for her role in the stabbing death of her abusive mother. However, she maintains that her actions were driven by desperation and the need to escape the ongoing Munchausen by proxy abuse she suffered.

During her interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Gypsy Rose revealed that she did not want her mother dead, but believed it was the only way to escape her nightmarish situation. "I didn't want her dead, I just wanted out of my situation and I thought that was the only way out," she confessed. Despite the years of abuse, Gypsy Rose refused to label her mother as a monster, acknowledging that she too had her own demons to battle.

The disturbing details of Gypsy Rose's childhood abuse came to light during her trial. Her mother had forced her to pretend to be seriously ill, subjecting her to unnecessary medical procedures and making her travel in a wheelchair and use a feeding tube, despite her being perfectly healthy. It was under these circumstances that, at the age of 23 and addicted to prescription painkillers, Gypsy Rose and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, devised a plan to end her mother's life.

Now that she is free, Gypsy Rose wants her story to serve as a cautionary tale to others who may find themselves in similar situations. "I share my story to be a cautionary tale so that the next person that might be in a situation like mine, they don't take the route that I did," she expressed. After serving most of her 10-year sentence, Gypsy Rose was released from a Missouri prison last Thursday. However, Godejohn remains incarcerated, serving a life sentence for Dee Dee's murder.

During the interview, Gypsy Rose was asked about the fairness of her release while Godejohn remains behind bars. She responded by acknowledging their shared regrets and stating that she had served her time. She wished him well on his journey.

Munchausen by proxy syndrome, the psychological disorder in which parents fabricate or exaggerate their children's illnesses for attention, played a significant role in Gypsy Rose's case. Her story gained widespread attention through the 2017 HBO documentary "Mommy Dead and Dearest," which delved into the circumstances surrounding her mother's murder. Gypsy Rose has also released a book, titled "Release: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom," and is set to star in a three-part Lifetime special called "The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard."

Remarkably, Gypsy Rose has already amassed over 10 million followers on social media, leading experts to predict that she could earn up to $100,000 per post through endorsement deals, brand partnerships, and speaking engagements. Her newfound fame, however, pales in comparison to the importance she places on sharing her cautionary tale and raising awareness about the horrors of Munchausen by proxy abuse.
