Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hospitalized for infection after prostate cancer surgery

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin underwent surgery for prostate cancer and was later treated for a urinary tract infection related to the operation, doctors revealed on Tuesday. The 70-year-old Austin was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on December 22nd, where he underwent surgery to address the cancer. However, a week later, he developed a urinary tract infection. Surprisingly, senior administration and defense officials were not informed about his hospitalization or his cancer diagnosis for several days.

According to the doctors, Austin's cancer was detected during a routine screening in early December. They described the surgical procedure as minimally invasive, and Austin was able to return home the following day. However, on January 1st, he experienced severe abdominal, hip, and leg pain, along with nausea, due to the infection. Despite the challenges, doctors emphasized that Austin's prognosis is excellent, as the cancer was detected early.

The announcement of Austin's cancer diagnosis came after days of speculation and questions regarding his hospitalization. Many were puzzled as to why President Joe Biden and other top officials had not been informed about Austin's condition. Some Republican lawmakers even called for Austin's removal from office. In response to the controversy, the White House chief of staff issued a directive, ordering Cabinet members or secretaries to notify his office in the event that they are unable to perform their duties.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration, still reeling from the news of Austin's illness, has initiated a policy review. Jeff Zients, in a memo to Cabinet secretaries, instructed them to submit any existing procedures for delegating authority in the event of incapacitation or loss of communication by Friday. As the review progresses, agencies are required to inform Zients' office and the office of Cabinet affairs at the White House if a circumstance arises where a Cabinet head is unable to fulfill their duties.

The delayed notification to President Biden and other top officials about Austin's hospitalization and transfer of power to his deputy was attributed to a key staffer's absence due to illness. A Pentagon spokesman acknowledged that the flu-stricken staff member's absence caused the oversight.

The news of Austin's cancer diagnosis and subsequent infection has raised concerns about transparency within the administration. The incident has prompted a reevaluation of protocols and procedures to ensure that such lapses in communication do not recur. As Defense Secretary Austin continues his recovery, the focus remains on his positive prognosis and the need for improved communication channels within the administration.
