Feds offer $50,000 reward after 3 endangered gray wolves found dead in Oregon

11:59 12.02.2024

In a tragic incident, three endangered gray wolves from the Gearhart Mountain Pack were found dead in southern Oregon, prompting federal officials to offer a $50,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced on Friday that the bodies of the wolves were discovered after the digital collars worn by two of them sent a mortality signal on December 29. Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division troopers responded to the signal and found the two collared wolves, along with one more that wasn't wearing a collar.

The collared wolves were identified as a breeding age female named OR115 and an adolescent named OR142. The third wolf was also a subadult. The deaths occurred in an area known for wolf activity, stretching across Klamath and Lake counties. However, no details were released regarding how the wolves died, leaving authorities searching for answers.

Gray wolves, the largest member of the canidae family, have faced significant challenges in the past. Once widespread across the continental United States, their numbers declined drastically due to predator-control programs in the 1900s. In 1978, they were classified as endangered throughout the U.S. and Mexico. The protection of wolves remains a controversial and politically charged topic. In 2021, President Donald Trump's administration ended the wolves' protections nationally, and their management is now handled by individual states.

This incident in Oregon highlights the ongoing threats faced by gray wolves. The deaths of these endangered animals have sparked concern among wildlife conservationists and animal rights activists. The reward offered by federal officials aims to encourage individuals to come forward with any information that could help solve the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a separate incident, wildlife officials in Arizona are investigating the illegal killing of a desert bighorn sheep near Gila Bend, about 70 miles southwest of Phoenix. The adult ram was found shot and left for dead around the weekend of January 13. To aid in the investigation, local hunting and conservation groups, including the Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society, Arizona Deer Association, and Arizona Antelope Foundation, have contributed a combined $6,000 to the reward. The Arizona Game and Fish Department's Operation Game Thief has also added $500 to the reward.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the illegal killing of the desert bighorn sheep to come forward and contact the Operation Game Thief Hotline. The Arizona Game and Fish Department emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for such crimes, stating that poachers are not hunters or sportsmen but criminals who are stealing from the residents of Arizona. They hope that someone who may have seen or heard something near the crime scene will provide valuable information that can help solve the case.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by endangered wildlife and the importance of public support in protecting these species. The rewards offered in both cases aim to incentivize individuals to come forward with information, highlighting the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies, conservation groups, and the public in combating wildlife crimes.
