17:07 22.01.2024

Dexter Scott King, the youngest son of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, has passed away at the age of 62 after a battle with prostate cancer. The news was confirmed by his brother, Martin Luther King III, who expressed deep sadness and asked for prayers for the entire King family, especially Dexter's wife, Leah Weber King.

Dexter King was known for his portrayal of his father in the movie "The Rosa Parks Story" and for his activism. He served as chairman of the King Center and president of the King Estate, working to advance the dream that his parents had for their children and future generations. His sister, Bernice King, CEO of the King Center, expressed her heartbreak over losing another sibling and asked for strength during this difficult time.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, founder and president of the National Action Network, mourned Dexter King's death and spoke of his dedication to turning his pain into activism. Sharpton emphasized that Dexter was only seven years old when his father was assassinated and that he carried on his father's legacy with bravery and determination.

Dexter King's death marks another loss for the King family, following the passing of his mother, Coretta Scott King, in 2006 and his sister, Yolanda King, in 2007. Dexter, named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where his father served as a pastor, leaves behind a legacy of activism and a commitment to fighting for equality and justice.

The King Center in Atlanta released a statement confirming Dexter King's passing and expressing their condolences. They highlighted his role as a leader in the civil rights movement and his dedication to continuing his parents' work. Dexter's wife, Leah Weber King, also released a statement, describing his battle with prostate cancer and his peaceful passing in his sleep.

Dexter Scott King's death is a significant loss for the civil rights community and for those who continue to fight for equality and justice. His contributions as an activist and leader will be remembered and celebrated, and his legacy will live on through the work of the King Center and the countless lives he touched.
