Rapper Killer Mike arrested at Grammys after winning 3 awards

05:09 05.02.2024

Rapper Killer Mike, also known as Michael Render, was arrested at the Crypto.com Arena during the Grammys 2024 on Sunday after winning three awards earlier in the day. The arrest was a result of an alleged physical altercation with a security guard at the event, according to law enforcement officials. A video posted by Hollywood Reporter journalist Chris Gardner showed the 48-year-old rapper being escorted through the arena by at least two police officers and several men in black suits. As he walked through, a bystander shouted "Free Mike." Gardner added in a follow-up tweet that it was possible Mike may be released later that night, but it was unclear if he was being booked at the arena and what charges he was facing.

Earlier in the day, Mike had won all three awards he was nominated for: Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for "Scientists & Engineers," as well as Best Rap Album for "Michael." However, his arrest overshadowed his victories and caused a stir at the Grammys. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that a male adult was arrested for a physical altercation at the Crypto.com Arena but did not disclose the individual's identity. They stated that the person was currently being questioned by authorities and if they were booked and arrested, their identity would be made available.

Representatives for Killer Mike have not yet responded to requests for comment. The Grammy-winner is known for hosting Netflix's Trigger Warning with Killer Mike, a documentary series that explores issues affecting the black community. He also made an emotional plea to calm a protest against police brutality in Atlanta in May 2020 following the death of George Floyd.

In a video uploaded by Hollywood Reporter journalist Chris Gardner, Killer Mike was seen being escorted out of the Grammy Awards in handcuffs. The rapper, who goes by the stage name "Run The Jewels," was walked through the Crypto.com Arena by police. According to Gardner, an official informed him that the arrest was a misdemeanor and unrelated to anything that happened at the arena that day. It is likely that Killer Mike will be released once the situation is resolved.

Killer Mike's wins at the Grammys were a significant achievement for the artist. He swept all three categories he was nominated in, beating out rap heavyweights such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Nicki Minaj. His wins, which were awarded before the main broadcast, marked his first Grammy trophies in over 20 years. In his acceptance speeches, Killer Mike expressed his excitement, stating that as a Black man in America, his childhood dream of becoming a part of music had come true.

Despite the success of Killer Mike's night, his arrest has dominated the conversation surrounding the Grammys. Fans and onlookers are eagerly awaiting further details about the incident and the rapper's response.
