Man convicted in Alaska Native woman's murder captured on stolen memory card

06:07 23.02.2024

A South African man, Brian Steven Smith, was found guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday for the violent deaths of two Alaska Native women, Kathleen Henry and Veronica Abouchuk. The 52-year-old showed no reaction in court as the jury delivered the unanimous verdict. Smith was arrested after a woman stole his cellphone and discovered gruesome footage of the killings from 2019. The woman, a sex worker who became a key witness, copied the footage to a memory card and turned it over to police. Smith later confessed to killing Abouchuk as well. The graphic videos showed Henry being beaten and strangled in an Anchorage hotel room, with Smith's voice heard narrating the events. He was found guilty of all 14 charges, including two counts of first-degree murder. Smith faces a mandatory 99-year sentence for the substantial physical torture involved in the murders. Family members of the victims, including Freda Dan from Stebbing, praised law enforcement for their work on the case. Smith's wife, Stephanie Bissland, expressed shock at his actions but plans to visit him in prison. The trial revealed the brutal details of the murders, which involved both physical and sexual assault. The case highlighted the vulnerability of Native women in Alaska, with both victims having experienced homelessness. Smith's disturbing confession and the harrowing footage presented in court shocked the community and led to his conviction for the brutal killings.
