Suspect Arrested for Hate Crime at Rutgers Islamic Center

07:52 23.04.2024

A New Jersey man, Jacob Beacher, has been charged with a federal hate crime after allegedly breaking into the Center for Islamic Life at Rutgers University in New Brunswick during the Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Fitr. Beacher, 24, is accused of vandalizing the center, damaging religious artifacts, including Turbah prayer stones, and stealing a Palestinian flag and a charity box. The estimated damage is around $40,000. Security camera footage shows Beacher approaching the center's back door around 2:40 a.m. on April 10 and leaving after about 20 minutes. He was captured on surveillance video near the center and his phone was located at a nearby park shortly after the break-in. Beacher faces charges of intentional or attempted obstruction of religious practice and making false statements to federal authorities. The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the Muslim community at Rutgers and beyond, with the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations stating that the vandalism is an example of the "bigoted violence" faced by Muslim, Palestinian, and allied students on college campuses across the country. The Islamic center expressed relief that the suspect is in custody and vowed to continue their mission despite the act of terror. The incident comes amid escalating tensions following the Israel-Hamas conflict, with attacks on Muslims and Arab Americans on the rise in the US. The Rutgers University community has condemned the act of violence and emphasized that such acts of hatred and bigotry have no place on their campus. Beacher is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Monday afternoon.
