Michelle Troconis convicted in disappearance of Jennifer Dulos

Michelle Troconis was convicted on all counts Friday in the murder of Jennifer Dulos, nearly five years after the Connecticut mother of five went missing. The jury of three men and three women found Troconis guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, tampering with evidence, and hindering the prosecution. Troconis, who had dated Jennifer's estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, was accused of helping him kill his wife in 2019 and covering up the crime. Fotis Dulos was charged with murder in the case but later died by suicide. Troconis, 49, was also convicted of tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution in the killing of Jennifer Dulos, 50, a mother of five whose body has never been found. A judge issued her declaration of death last October.

As soon as the final verdict was read, Troconis dropped into her chair and put her head down on the table, while across the courtroom, the loved ones of Jennifer Dulos appeared to be relieved. "Today's verdict is a crucial attribution of accountability, not a victory," a spokesperson for the family said in a statement. "There can be no victory when five children are growing up without their mother. This verdict represents the meticulous collection, analysis, and presentation of evidence to illuminate an unconscionable series of crimes." Troconis was led out of the courtroom, asking if she could say goodbye to her family, but was only allowed to say a few words in Spanish.

During the month-long trial, jurors heard from dozens of witnesses and from Troconis herself in three separate interviews with Connecticut State Police. In those interviews, Troconis changed her story multiple times, initially claiming she was home with Fotis Dulos on the day of Jennifer Dulos' disappearance before eventually admitting that was not true. Surveillance videos showed Fotis Dulos disposing of bloody evidence, with Troconis seen wiping her hand on the ground. She claimed she was wiping gum off her hand, but prosecutors argued that she knew what was going on and helped with the disposal.

The big question in the case was the top charge of murder conspiracy, a class B felony that carries up to 20 years in prison. The judge raised Troconis' bail from $2.1 million to $6 million, and if she is able to pay, she will be placed on house arrest. Her sentencing is set for May 31, where she could face up to 20 years in prison if the charges run concurrently, or up to 50 years if they run consecutively. It has been 1,743 days since Jennifer Dulos vanished from her New Canaan home, leaving behind five children who are now in the care of their 88-year-old grandmother.

Despite Jennifer Dulos' body never being found, authorities found bloodlike stains in her garage and her DNA on various items linked to the case. Fotis Dulos and Troconis were both arrested on suspicion of evidence tampering, with Fotis Dulos also facing murder charges before his death. Troconis pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and other charges, but the jury ultimately found her guilty on all counts. Jennifer Dulos was last seen in May 2019 after dropping her children off at school, and despite her body never being found, she was officially declared dead in October 2023. Troconis now faces the consequences of her involvement in a case that has captivated the nation for years.
