Woman accused of buying guns used in Minnesota first responder killings

04:09 15.03.2024

A tragic incident in Burnsville, Minnesota, has left the community mourning the loss of three first responders after a standoff that turned deadly last month. The suspect, Shannon Gooden, who was legally prohibited from owning firearms due to a felony conviction, opened fire on police officers and a firefighter-paramedic who responded to the scene. During the standoff, Gooden barricaded himself inside his home with seven children, ages 2 to 15, before ultimately taking his own life.

The investigation into how Gooden obtained the firearms he used in the shooting led to the indictment of Ashley Anne Dyrdahl, his girlfriend at the time. Dyrdahl, 35, is accused of purchasing at least five guns for Gooden between September 2023 and January 2024, despite being aware of his felony status. Prosecutors allege that Dyrdahl knowingly and intentionally transferred the firearms to Gooden, in violation of federal law. She faces charges of conspiracy, straw purchasing, and making false statements during the purchase of a firearm.

Authorities praised the investigation that led to Dyrdahl's indictment, emphasizing the importance of holding those accountable who enable individuals like Gooden to possess firearms illegally. The tragic loss of officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, as well as firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth, has left the community devastated. The memorial service for the fallen heroes drew thousands of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and paramedics, highlighting the impact of their sacrifice on the community.
