A manhunt is underway after an Idaho inmate, Skylar Meade, escaped custody during an early Wednesday morning ambush at a Boise area hospital that left three corrections officers wounded, authorities say. Meade, a documented member of the white supremacist gang the Aryan Knights with many prior convictions, was being discharged from Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center just after 2 a.m. when another person began shooting, according to Josh Tewalt, director of the Idaho Department of Correction. The suspected shooter and Meade fled the scene in a gray four-door sedan, possibly a Honda Civic, just before police arrived.
Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar described the shooting as a “brazen” and "coordinated attack" to facilitate Meade's escape. One of the officers wounded by the suspect is in critical but stable condition, while the other two have non-life-threatening injuries. A third officer was injured by gunfire from a responding police officer who mistook him for the shooter. The hospital was placed on lockdown as police searched for the suspects.
Meade, who has distinctive tattoos on his face and body, was serving a sentence for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with a firearm enhancement and was due to be released in 2036. He had been transported to the hospital the previous night after engaging in "self-injurious behavior." Police are warning the public not to approach Meade as he is considered armed and dangerous. Residents are advised to call 911 or the Ada County Dispatch if they spot the suspect or the gray sedan. Winegar urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the dangerous nature of the suspects.
