Cellphone data proves Bryan Kohberger was not at home during Idaho murders

06:38 18.04.2024

The legal team representing Bryan Kohberger, the suspect accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, has filed a court document outlining an alibi defense based on cellphone tower data. According to the filing, Kohberger's attorneys claim that he was out driving late at night and miles away from Moscow, Idaho, where the murders took place. They assert that his mobile device was located south of Pullman, Washington, and west of Moscow on the night of the slayings, supporting his alibi that he was out driving to hike, run, or stargaze.

Kohberger, a doctoral student studying criminal justice and criminology at the University of Washington, was arrested in Pennsylvania in December 2022 and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The defense plans to call an expert witness, cell tower data analyst Sy Ray, to testify and corroborate Kohberger's whereabouts on the night of the killings. The filing also mentioned that more information on Kohberger's location will be shared once prosecutors provide the requested discovery evidence.

The case has garnered significant attention in the small community of Moscow, Idaho, with a population of 25,000 residents and an 11,000-strong student population. Kohberger's attorneys have also requested a change of venue for the trial, arguing that he would not receive a fair trial due to extensive pretrial publicity and the nature of the allegations. A hearing on the change of venue motion is scheduled for May 14, 2024.

Kohberger faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in connection with the deaths of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Prosecutors have indicated that they will seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted. The case is still developing, and more updates are expected as the trial progresses.
