Moody Blues co-founder Mike Pinder passes away at 82

08:17 26.04.2024

Mike Pinder, the legendary keyboardist and last surviving founding member of the Moody Blues, has passed away at the age of 82. Pinder's family announced his peaceful passing at his home in Northern California, although the cause of death was not disclosed. Described as a "musician, father, cosmic philosopher & friend" by his bandmate John Lodge, Pinder was a key figure in the progressive rock era, known for his innovative use of the Mellotron - a precursor to the sampler.

Born in Birmingham, England in 1941, Pinder co-founded the Moody Blues in 1964 alongside Ray Thomas, Denny Laine, Graeme Edge, and Clint Warwick. The group achieved success with their cover of Go Now in 1965 before Pinder departed in 1966. He played a pivotal role in recruiting Justin Hayward and Lodge to solidify the band's classic lineup, which produced hits like "Nights in White Satin" and the groundbreaking album "Days of Future Passed."

After the Moody Blues went on hiatus in the 1970s, Pinder released a solo album and eventually relocated to Northern California, where he worked in the tech industry. Despite his departure from the band, Pinder's influence on the music world endured, with artists like Yes and Genesis citing him as an inspiration for their own work.

Pinder's son Dan confirmed his passing, stating that his father had been in hospice care due to breathing difficulties. In a statement, Lodge reflected on Pinder's impact, noting his spiritual grounding and profound vision of humanity. Pinder's legacy as a visionary musician and philosopher will continue to resonate with generations to come.
